This wordthink originally appeared in the Escapist . Its an exercise in tackling the graphics vs narrative argument, which perhaps occasionally lapses into cliche. As youll see as you read through, I dont necessarily agree with all my arguments - it was written in an attempt to create a thesis which would generate opposing antitheses. Together,...

A Thousand Years of Dreams: Mortality in Lost Odyssey

2008-02-19 04:11:10 by Destructoid.com in Destructoid - Hardcore video game blog

While playing RPGs, I have encountered situations that sometimes predated me having the same experiences in real life. As a little girl, the first of these I found was comradery, which took me a while to find since I was the bookworm type. This infused the games I played with a sort of private and thrilling magic, which hasn't entirely worn off...

No, weve not discovered that weve actually been PC gaming since 1008, but rather we heard that our official Steam Group now has a thousand brave souls amongst its members. Wowie! Yes, proper websites and magazines with budgets and funding and community editors and things may have tens of thousands, but were jolly chuffed that so many people want...

April NPD numbers are in, giving us both hardware and software sales data for all consoles and handhelds. On one hand, the Nintendo DS came in second (we dont need to tell you which family-oriented console took 1st, do we?). The DS sold roughly 415 thousand units, but suffered a considerable fall compared to the 698 thousand systems sold during...

The further you go, the harder it is to progress

2008-03-26 10:16:00 by Tobold in Tobold's MMORPG Blog

I was chatting recently with a reader about WoW when he made a good remark: "The further you go, the harder it is to progress". That pretty much sums up the whole character progression game from level 1 to full T6 epic gear. It includes my wife complaining how slow it is while she approaches the level cap for the first time in 3 years of WoW....

A watery mini-rant

2008-01-14 10:04:00 by Tobold in Tobold's MMORPG Blog

As I said I leveled my WoW mage from 44 to 47 this weekend. And that again made me wonder why they set up the mage's summon water spell the way it is. The various drinks that recover mana have a level restriction, and that restriction goes up in steps of 10 levels. There is level 5 drinks, level 15 drinks, level 25 drinks, level 35 drinks, level...
