A zappy Zapper is officially an Xbox Original

As promised, the classic and wicked cricket Zapper has made its way to the Xbox Live Marketplace as a 1200 Microsoft point Xbox Original title. Blitz Games' 599MB Zapper includes eighteen levels spread across four worlds with one final boss that's oh so intimidatingly named Maggie. Exciting stuff.

Warning to those who love themselves scrolling credits, because Microsoft warns that the Xbox Originals version of Zapper suffers from "minor graphical corruption occurs in the End Credits" which "causes some of the end credits to appear cut off." End credits being cut off? Seriously, what has the world come to?

The next game to grace Xbox Originals with its presence will be Zapper: One Wicked Cricket, a semi-obscure game that spent most of its shelf life sitting in the bargain bin.

The Frogger rip-off will debut on November 17 and cost a whopping 1200 Microsoft Points -- it may be time to start thinking about adjusting prices to match quality, people.

It's hard enough to imagine why anyone would choose Zapper to be an Xbox Original, let alone trying to picture someone paying $15 for the game. And even if you did want to play Zapper, you could just buy a hard copy since it's compatible with Xbox 360.

We know, we know. It's kind of hard to keep reading this when you know that Zapper is headed to Xbox Originals. Stay with us though, because the game isn't actually available yet, so you can't run off to download it anyway. No, the game won't actually be available on the service until November 17, at which point we imagine all of the world's social interaction and commerce will cease -- apart from the massive influx of MS Point purchases -- throwing the global economy into a tailspin. Deliveries will stop, utilities will shut down, but no one will care. We'll all be mesmerized by the awesomeness that is Zapper, and we will play until the electricity fails. As Zapper constantly prods the pleasure nodes in our brains, we will slowly, blissfully succumb to starvation.

Either that or Zapper's release will slip by completely unnoticed, one of the two.

Zapper coming to Xbox Originals, why are you laughing?

You know that song, "Live Like You Were Dying?" You know what near-death activity you won't find in there between "Rocky Mountain climbin'" and going "2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Manchu?" "Turning forgettable Frogger 2 rip-off Zapper into an Xbox Original." Likewise, "playing Zapper" or "ever thinking about Zapper" are also conspicuously absent. In fact, we'd wager that you could gather the bucket lists of every member of humanity and never see Zapper mentioned once.

This is why we should have been consulted before a single member of humanity was tasked with spending one nanosecond of their time turning Zapper into a 1200-point Xbox Original. Then we could have advised them that they'd be better off wadding all that time into a big chrono-ball, putting it in a rocket and shooting it into the sun.

Zapper Joins Baffling Xbox Originals Lineup

The next Xbox title to be released as a digital download via the Xbox Live Marketplace is Blitz Games' 2002 mascot platformer Zapper: One Wicked Cricket.

The game will hit the XBLM on November 17 and will set players back the standard $15. Microsoft has yet to reveal the size of the downloaded file, though it should be less than 4GB, based on the maximum size of the other titles in the Xbox Originals lineup.

While any addition to Microsoft's downloadable library of classic titles is welcome, I have to wonder what exactly drove Microsoft to select Zapper.

Certainly it can't be quality -- Metacritic has a 55 percent aggregate score for the Xbox iteration of the title -- and most gamers, even those who have been playing for decades now, would be hard-pressed to recall the title, let alone salient plot points.

Perhaps the Xbox Originals lineup is a random smattering of Xbox exclusives? Zapper doesn't fit that criteria either as it saw release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, GameCube and PC.

Maybe someone at Microsoft saw a need for more platformers? That's the best explanation, but if that were true, why wouldn't the company opt for a better game such as the Xbox exclusive Blinx: The Time Sweeper?

Not only was Blinx(and its sequel) released only on Microsoft's platform, both titles outrank Zapperby at least 13 points, if Metacritic is anything to go by.

Microsoft Xbox Originals started life as an intriguing prospect. The company offered players a chance to conveniently replay blockbusters like Haloor cult classics like Crimson Skies, but more recently it has become a baffling repository for seemingly random games.

Here's hoping Microsoft retraces its steps and starts offering gamers only quality titles from now on.

I know that paintball is popular, but is professional paintball popular? Is it popular enough to warrant a line of official video games? I am not trying to sound like a jerk…it’s an honest question! Well, whatever the answer to that is, there is yet another paintball game on the way…and this one’s coming to the Wii. Wii Zapper support included…who knows, this might be fun!

Perfect Shot at the perfect price

Nyko's Perfect Shot caused a minor sensation when it came out, by being much more gun-like than, and basically superior to, Nintendo's own Zapper. It was even hard to find for a while. The situation seems to have gotten a lot better in terms of availability, though they might sell out again after this. GameStop has reduced the price of Nyko's handgun-shaped Wii Remote shell to just ten dollars.

Other price reductions that may interest you: Koei's ambitious RPG Opoona for $30, the first Rock Band bundle for $140, and Dewy's Adventure used for $13. We'll also point out Target Terror for $20 here if only because you could actually use the Perfect Shot with it.
