I actually don’t have Linux on my PS3 anymore, but next year I’d like to upgrade my hard drive again to a 300 GB or so and put Linux back on. While I had Linux (Ubuntu actually) I didn’t use it much. But lately I wish I did have it just for general web browsing and chatting when the wife is using the other PC. Because the PS3 web browser still needs work. Sony just put Firefox on it and call it good.

I’m not sure if I’ll go with Yellow Dog Linux or Ubuntu. Ubuntu offers more support than Yellow Dog Linux. But YDL is made specifically for the PS3. Anyway here are the primary updates to YDL, and it’s now available for download.

“For end users, Yellow Dog Linux v6.1 offers an updated Firefox and OpenOffice.org, a vastly improved graphical wireless configuration tool, and the introduction of ps3vram functionality which enables use of PS3 video RAM for temporary storage or swap.”

Synergy. Can you dig it? Sony does, finally noticing those 14 million accounts stranded on the console-side of PlayStation Network. We imagine the meeting went a little something like this:

Exec One: You see, we've got 14 million people over here [*motions to his right*]. But what if we could take them [*lifts his hands up*] and stick 'em over here, too? [*motions back to his left*]

Exec Two: So are you gonna eat that last Mint Milano or what?

Exec One: No -- well ... let's split it.

Exec Two: Deal.

The result? PSN IDs are being incorporated into PlayStation.com and, at a later date, PlayStation.Blog. Doing so will make your friends list and other features accessible through a web browser -- oh my! On a solemn note, these changes bring PlayStation Underground to its inevitable end, but members can hold on to some of the good times by merging their Underground accounts with their PSN IDs. And this is only the beginning, promises PSN senior director Susan Panico: "before this year is over we'll have more enhancements for your gamer profile." Dare we say, a New PlayStation Experience?
PSN IDs on PlayStation.com, 'Underground' closes originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 14:22:00 EST.

I’m short on time this morning, so I need to make this brief.

The “Desktop Tower Defense” challenge didn’t go so well yesterday. Multiplayer gaming on Casualcollective.com is still a bit buggy. But I’ll be back on there hopefully tomorrow to see if it’s improving. I can confirm that the people I did face-off with on the game over there did not beat me.

Last night I started “Spider-Man: Web of Shadows,” which a friend told me is the best super-hero game ever made. If that’s the case, then the best super-hero game ever made has poor voice-acting, clunky graphics, and a clumsily paced introduction. But… after about 30 minutes, the game begins teaching the player such a spectacular move set — and begins layering on so many fun combat and collectible-driven challenges — that none of the faults really matter.

Web-swinging into a crowd of enemies with foot extended for a thug-punting kick is a blast. I don’t expect to tire soon of walking up walls or using a web to hop from enemy to enemy without ever touching the ground or performing so many more of the game’s crazy moves.

This game is rough. But it’s also extremely fun.

On December 31, Google will be shutting down its web-based virtual social environment Lively.

"Embedded rooms in blogs and other web pages will continue to show an image," reads a statement on Lively's official page, "but users will no longer be able to enter Lively rooms and interact."

Launched last July, the Google Labs project allowed users to create virtual rooms, decorate them, and create avatars. Likened to Second Life and Sony's "it's coming, we swear!" PlayStation Home, Lively didn't quite take off like the folks at Google had expected.

And maybe I was part of the problem -- I've never once used it. Perhaps it's because I don't spend much time in virtual spaces outside of cooperative or competitive videogames (I prefer to do my chatting in person, thank you very much). Still, it's sad to see such an ambitious project go down, and I look forward to the ineffectual online petitions trying to keep it alive.

In other news, Google recently revealed "skins" for Gmail, one that includes ninjas. What more do you people want?

They can afford to try out projects, and don't stick with what isn't working. Well, it appears that their Lively virtual environment chat-rooms haven't worked out. Google will be shuttering the Lively service on 31 December 2008, less than six months after launching.
Lively's Web-site -- launched to the public on July 9 this year -- will remain up, and the images of the rooms preserved, but the rooms themselves will no longer be active. This seems to also end Google's plans to leverage Lively as a games-platform. It isn't clear at...
Continue reading End of life for Google's Lively

End of life for Google's Lively originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 09:00:00 EST.

Early next week, we’ll be integrating additional community features into PlayStation.com. We are excited to roll-out the first phase, which includes the ability to sign-in to PlayStation.com and, soon after, PlayStation.Blog with your PlayStation Network ID. Of course, your PlayStation Network ID gets you access to all the good things on the PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP, including games, movies and TV shows on the PlayStation Store, online gaming, and, soon to come for PS3, PlayStation Home.

In addition, we are making enhancements to the gamer profile features. Your profile will include your PSN online ID, your avatar, and a short “about me” section. You’ll also be able to display your friends list and, on the game detail pages, you’ll be able to include ratings and reviews for all of your favorite games. These features were created so that you can make new friends, learn new tricks and tips, talk trash, offer advice, console the defeated, praise the winners, and more.

If you have an Underground account on PlayStation.com and haven’t already merged it with your PlayStation Network ID, click here to do so. If you don’t have an Underground account but would like to create a PlayStation Network account to participate in the new features on PlayStation.com, click here.

We decided to dissolve the PlayStation Underground program in order to provide more PlayStation fans with a glimpse into the PlayStation Network world via the web. We hope you enjoy this next step in the evolution of PlayStation.com.

Stay tuned; before this year is over we’ll have more enhancements for your gamer profile.

The Legend of Neil is up online with it’s climactic season finale. The irreverent spoof of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series. It started out as short uploaded to the web by Sandeep Parikh and Tony Janning, and eventually got picked up by Comedy Central. Gas attendant Neil passes out and finds himself trapped inside the game playing the part of Link in a twisted Zelda reality.

This is a very adult series of shorts with no age gate in place so I can’t embed the video. However all gamers of age with knowledge of the Zelda series and a wicked sense of humor should check out the Legend of Neil series on Effinfunny.

Welcome back to another look at Fallout 3 coverage from around the web.

We’ll start with a few interesting articles I’ve read this week. Before reading these, be warned there are spoilers within these articles. Up first, GamesRadar’s Tyler Wilde has a three-page feature detailing how you can become “evil” within the game. Rather than just looking at things from the dark side, D. Riley at The New Gamer discusses morality issues from both sides — focusing on Tenpenny Tower quests. Meanwhile, at GamaSutra, Duncan Fyfe shares his opinion of the game while sharing what he believes the game signifies. Here’s a snippet:

“On your tour of D.C., you’re made to revisit all the initial promise inherent in that document, while you’re picking up the pieces and kicking around the ashes. The buildings stand remarkably intact, frozen in time, for you to look up at and think about how this all went to hell.”

Moving along, last week we let you know that Pete and Emil would be answering questions for their old friends at The Adrenaline Vault. That podcast (#8) is now available here. In other podcast news, there’s a new interview with Pete at Gamers with Jobs. To hear Pete, tune in around the 38-minute mark.

More reviews are showing up online for Fallout 3. You can check out new reviews at Gaming Life, GameFlak, Heroes of Gaming, GameZone, VideoGameMedia, and Aeropause. On the subject of reviews, Fallout 3’s reviews at IGN helped it earn Game of the Month honors on both PC and Xbox 360.

Could you ever pick a Nintendo DS game as Game Of The Year?

Would you ever pick a web browser game? Should a critic consider a game you played on your iPhone? An XBLA game?

This question of whether a small game could be Game of the Year came up earlier this week in the Multiplayer comments section of my VGA post.

Reader “withaneight” wrote:

With games so many fantastic games available as direct download i am surprised to see none on the ballot. Was there no place for Castle Crashers or Braid on the list game of the year list? I think they were both better than Metal Gear and GTA4. I was just wondering if there is a reason for this; are you not allowed to nominate non-retail games, even if they are rated by the ESRB?

To which I replied:

I hear you. The choices on the ballot above are the product of lists of nominations submitted by many judges, myself included. I’ve found that with awards like these many reporters and critics are loathe to nominate anything smaller than a disc-based game for Game of the Year. I got some grief here last year for picking Desktop Tower Defense as my GOTY because many people thought I was nuts for choosing that over a full-sized games (others had other criticisms, of course.) The games I had submitted as my GOTY contenders to Spike were: Game of the Year LittleBigPlanet, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, Spore, World of Goo and The World Ends With You. That was a few weeks ago. Since then, I’m not sure if TWEWY is even still my favorite RPG of the year. The mind keeps changing!

“Wario Ware: Twisted” is one of my favorite games ever. It came out in the U.S. in 2005. Would I have picked it that year over “Resident Evil 4“? In a heartbeat. Over “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas“? No way.

Would you ever name a “small” game — a non disc-based-console game — as your Game Of The Year? Do you think the critics ever should?

It’s not like the Oscars committee ever nominates a short film for Best Pitcure, but a game like “Braid” is worthy? Or no?

Cave Story remake developer Nicalis has been spreading exclusive content around the web, turning our daily news crawling into a delightful Cave Story scavenger hunt. The latest release is this screenshot found on WiiWare World, featuring the updated, redrawn graphics.

We have feared that the increased definition in the sprites and environments would change too much of Cave Story's unique look, but Pixel knows what he is doing. The new look is more detailed, but still retro -- it just looks like somebody sharpened the focus.

If you haven't tried Cave Story yet, don't worry about waiting for the WiiWare version. Play the freeware game now. You'll be ready to start again when the Wii game comes out.

Gallery: Cave Story (WiiWare)
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/cave-story-wiiware-1/1146666/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/cave-story-wiiware-1/1082121/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/cave-story-wiiware-1/1082120/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/cave-story-wiiware-1/1082119/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/cave-story-wiiware-1/1082118/">
