You know the old stereotype that a new expansion makes you replace the epics you worked so hard for with green quest rewards. Only I found that this isn't true at all in Wrath of the Lich King. I'm not wearing a single green quest item; in fact in spite of being a priest I now got into the habit of always choosing the quest reward that is either a weapon or plate armor, because I sell them anyway, and weapons and plate sell for more cash.

That isn't to say I'm still wearing my level 70 epics. There are only one or two left, the rest is replaced by blue gear from dungeons. I replaced my first epics with blue quest rewards I received from quests which required me to kill bosses in Utgarde Keep. The only quest rewards that are worth wearing are those you get for group / dungeon quests, usually at the end of a quest chain.

One other thing I noticed is that *if* you wouldn't do dungeons, but rely on quests for your gear, you'd be better off as a cloth wearer than as a plate wearer. There is usually one item of each on offer, but every cloth wearer can nowadays pretty much use every cloth item. They all give the same sort of spellpower, and while stats like haste rating, hit rating, crit rating, intelligenc, stamina, or spirit, are somewhat different in usefulness for the various cloth wearing classes, they are never completely useless. Not so for plate: As protection warrior a piece of plate armor with intelligence and spellpower bonus is completely useless. And I'd guess a retribution paladin or death knight wouldn't be too happy with a piece of plate armor that increases defense rating and shield block value.

So, what kind of gear are you wearing while leveling up through Wrath of the Lich King? Or are you already in full Naxxramas epic gear again? How about the various pieces of gear you can get from crafting, or buy with various tokens, PvE or PvP?
Tobold's MMORPG Blog

Developer GRIN (the same folks making Capcom's new Bionic Commando) studied all three of these games (and more) when drafting Wanted: WOF's design document.

This first gameplay video is hugely self-explanatory. Cover is a big deal in the game (the camera pulls in closely to force you to stick your neck out) and, as anyone who's seen the movie could anticipate, the "curving" of shots is a central gameplay mechanic. As you can see in the footage, there's a curved line that switches from red to white; pressing shoulder button on the controller displays this when you've gained enough adrenaline. Moving the left stick changes the arc, and when you have a clear shot, it turns white. This is used frequently.

The character animation and lighting are real stand-outs so far, although we're not exactly sure how keen we are on the quick-time-event style slo-mo sequences.

Gallery: Wanted: Weapons of Fate

Wanted: Weapons of Fate.
Here’s the latest briefing on Fallout 3 news found around the web.

As 2008 wraps up, we’re starting to see sites pulling together their GOTY lists. Fallout 3 is included in preliminary lists at The New York Times, Gamespot, and CNBC.

Having trouble surviving in the wasteland? IGN has a new video highlighting three of the most powerful weapons in Fallout 3 — with tips on how to find them.

Wanna know Todd’s ritual on release day? Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft got answers from Todd, as well as other notable developers for a post titled “What Game Developers Do When Their Games Launch.” You can check it out here.

Just as the sun rises in the east, we’ve got Fallout 3 reviews featured in “around the web.” New reviews can be found at ABC News, Just Press Play, GameZone, Quiet Earth, Neotaku, PALGN, Exclaim!, Gaming Trend, Game Freaks 365, and GameGirl. While I haven’t seen the review, nor would I be able to read it, 1Up reports that Japanese magazine Famitsu awarded Fallout 3 a score of 38/40. According to this report, the score would tie Oblivion for the highest non-Japanese RPG score ever in the magazine.

Finally, of all the Fallout 3 coverage I’ve sifted through, this has got to be the weirdest. At GameGrep, I found this clip where a guy is discussing his dreams on a radio station. Give it a listen, and within a few seconds, you’ll realize he’s pulling the DJ’s leg. I bet Three Dog is having a good laugh about this somewhere.

It is once again GameTap Thursday, and what a great week it is! Not only is a new episode of American McGee’s Grimm Volume 2 now available to play free for the first 24-hours, but subscribers can also download Gothic 3 and Kingpin. Metal Slug fans who have signed up on GameTap are in for a treat because Metal Slug X is the latest free game to be added to the growing roster (145 free games total).

Here are the details for each game added this week:

Grimm Volume 2, Episode 14: Iron John: A strange iron man living in the forest befriends a young man hoping an act of kindness will free him from his iron curse. With Iron John’s help the boy marries the princess and lives happily ever after—well, not really because Grimm hates that sort of thing.

Gothic 3: Piranha Bytes’ third in the series of fantasy-themed role-playing games. In this installment, The Nameless Hero arrives on a continent overrun with orcs, who have enslaved most of the humans in the area. The Gothic series thrives on choices and reputation, and this installment is no different - players can side with the orcs, save the humans, or both. Gothic 3 also boasts a beautifully-rendered open world, with lush jungles, deserts and intricately detailed icy tundras.

Kingpin: Life of Crime: Publisher Interplay and Redneck Rampage developer Grey Matter Interactive present Kingpin: Life of Crime, a first-person shooter set in a gritty, crime-ridden city. Players enact their revenge against drug kingpin Nikko Blanco using whatever weapons are available. Gameplay includes weapon modification, interactive conversations with non-playable characters, and the ability to hire gang members to join in the fight.

Metal Slug X: (Free to play for one week only) Morden’s Army is at it again, and only the Metal Slug team can stand in its way. But taking down Morden and his troops won’t be easy. Fortunately what the team lacks in wits, it makes up for with ordnance: they’ve got about ten zillion bullets and grenades, plus the ultra-advanced (and stylish) Metal Slug super vehicles. Released in 1999, it is something of a remixed, upgraded, “director’s cut” version of Metal Slug 2. Gentlemen, start your war.

December 11 will see the release of Grimm Volume 2, Episode 15: The Pied Piper which like all Grimm episodes, will be free to play for the first 24-hours. In it, the Piped Piper uses his siren call (or flute if you will) to lure a kingdom’s children to a watery grave. Just how much more horrible can Grimm make such a tale? Tune in next week to find out.

In the meantime, to play Metal Slug X for free or any of the other games in GameTap’s wide variety of free titles, head on over to the website and sign up. While you are there, if you decide to become a subscriber, you can sign up for that too.

A few months back at a press event for “Resistance 2” I asked Sony and Insomniac producers why their new first-person shooter existed.

I wasn’t asking a business question or a philosophical one. I was asking from a gamer’s perspective.

I argued that important FPS games need to satisfy, well, a need in gamers’ appetites. I suggested that “Call of Duty” serves an appetite for gamers to experience a first-person thrill ride. “Halo” fulfills the need for great competition, both against sophisticated artificial intelligence in its campaign mode and against millions of competitors online.

You could go down the list of great first-person series and find a reason each one might be essential for a gamer. But, I told the “Resistance” guys, I struggled to identify what the essential “something” of “Resistance” is. Without that “something,” I figured, the series wouldn’t be seen as a leader in its genre, but instead just another solid game that happens to be a PlayStation exclusive.

I finished the “Resistance 2″ campaign a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed it. I didn’t think it was amazing, but it was fun and ended in a very interesting way. Yet I still didn’t think I’d found that “something.” The Insomniac guys had argued to me that the series’ alternate world history might be the series’ distinguishing mark. I considered that the games’ unusual weapons might be the thing. But neither idea is really helping “Resistance 2″ move to the forefront of the FPS pack, not in my mind and, I suspect, not in some other gamers’ minds.

Yesterday, however, I finally played a round of the game’s mission-based co-op with friends. I had only played it at that aforementioned press event, briefly. Last night I played it for an hour. And in that hour, in playing eight-man mission-based, character-class-defined, team co-op, I think I found “Resistance”’s “something.” Eight gamers against an army. A balance of skills and responsibilities. Teamwork. A defense of Earth.

It works. It’s the “something,” I think.

And now I have something to look forward to in the inevitable sequel.

Next: Do I go to the Wired store tonight to watch Media Molecule’s Alex Evans speak? Or do I go home and play “Banjo” and “Prince of Persia”?
