[My Mom and Dad]

Part of the reason I ended up doing game journalism is, I think, because of my Dad. He was a tech journo when I was a kid, which meant we had everything in the house worth playing for a good chunk of my lucky, lucky youth, and it means he's still pretty up on things today.

Whenever I wonder about the Wii's new audience, I just picture my early-fifties Mom holding the Wii Remote and declaring, ecstatically, a revelation to my father: "Michael! I'm really doing it!" That was a pretty promising day, I thought, because up until then the only involvement Mom had with video game consoles was to passive-aggressively vaccuum over the controller cords while I was trying to play.

So when my parents drove me back to New York City after I spent Thanksgiving in Massachusetts with them, I decided to show my parents some more new stuff, educate them about the miracle of new technology and the richness of present-day player experiences. I think I ended up learning more than they did, though.

My Dad Is Sony's Ideal Audience

This time, my Dad wanted to know about the PlayStation 3. Jack Tretton would thrill if he could hear Dad tell Mom all about how the PS3 is worth its price for the Blu-ray player alone -- and plus, said Dad, the PS3 has Tourist Trophy. Vehicle games are a major selling point to my motorcycle hobbyist father.

To gamers, the much-touted PS3 Blu-ray drive justifies the console's decidedly uncompetitive price just about as much as Nintendo still makes "hardcore" games -- which is to say it's a hilarious idea. First, we all saw how angling the PS3 as anything other than a video game console came to bite Sony -- and how fast they backpedaled as publishers showed signs of skittishness. Now, everyone who'd like to see the platform succeed knows that it needs to be cheaper, and hangs the blame on the Blu-ray decision.

When Kaz Hirai introduced the PS3 by enthusing about Blu-ray, and became upset that no one was interested in Ridge Racer, we all wondered who Hirai thought he was talking to. Guess it was my Dad -- turns out that Blu-ray drive is a significant factor to someone after all.

Dad wanted to check out a game with cars, though, and I had the excellent Midnight Club: Los Angeles for the Xbox 360 on hand. Knowing him, I had to hurry to skip the introductory cut scenes in order to get to the gameplay. After all, this was one of my rare opportunities to share my hobby (and my career) with my parents hands-on -- they tend to glaze over during my articles -- and I knew that if Dad had to sit through dialogue he'd lose interest.

MCLA held Dad's attention for about five minutes. He liked accelerating, but complained that he hates playing an analog stick with his left hand (he's right handed). He tried flipping the controller upside down to reverse the situation, but, of course, that reverses the controls, too. After about 30 seconds of playing the 360 controller in his lap with his hands crossed, he had enough.

If You've Got A Gun, It's A Shooter

I decided to see what my parents thought of Fallout 3, expecting them to be floored by just how far games had come since I was a brat mashing buttons on their living room floor. I loaded up a save that I had just outside Vault 101, where the nuclear wasteland was breathtaking and ready to explore.

"What is this?" Mom asks. "Where are you supposed to be?"

"It's post-apocalyptic Washington," I tell her. "It's really, really cool."

"It doesn't look like Washington," says Mom. "It just looks like... I don't know what." She is not impressed. "How is this Washington?" she keeps wanting to know.

"So this is a first-person shooter, huh?" Dad says.

"No," I insist. "It's more like an RPG, where --"

"Well then, what's that?" Dad points at the screen, where my big pistol is filling up the corner of the first-person view. "Why do you have a gun if it's not a shooter? It sure looks like a shooter to me." He does this partly because he knows he's oversimplifying and thinks it's funny that I'm getting irritated (and now you know where my contrarian nature comes from).

I have to admit, though, he really does have a point.

I start explaining to my parents all about action RPGs, and how FO3 isn't really an FPS, and I'm trying to talk about "actions affect the gameworld" and "death of the American dream" and "environmental storytelling," and suddenly it sounds ridiculous to me.

For just a minute, I see the game as my parents see it -- a guy with a gun trundling across a wasteland. The end.

What Are You?

Instead, I decide to start thinking of the things Mom would enjoy about a game console. She loves casual games, and she pretends to be a technophobe, but if she actually has a chance to acclimate to social media-type things, she tends to get hooked. So I explain to her about small downloadables, indie games, online casual titles and leaderboards, and the only thing I have on hand as an example is PixelJunk Eden. It's no Zuma or anything, but I feel pretty convinced that my parents will find it more relatable than FO3.

It's kind of an art game, I explain, I talk a lot about music and color and flowers growing, and then I put it on.

"This isn't colorful," says Mom, wondering if she's missed something. "I just see blue."

"Well, the colors change when you get these things... you have to pop all these flowers --"

"What flowers?"

It's a little more understandable to them after I play for a minute or two, pollinate a few seeds and keep climbing, but Mom needs to know, "What are you? Is that, like, a scorpion?"

The question of what are you has always seemed highly irrelevant to me when playing PixelJunk Eden -- but, honestly, my best friend, who's a much more acclimated gamer, frequently gets hung up on the same issue.

"Nah," says Mom, after some assessment. "I don't think I would like this."

"Mom wouldn't like this," Dad agrees.

Still, my parents might get a PS3. But the real takeaway of their test drive, for me, was their perspective on this little capsule of my everyday living room experience.

And, you know, my parents aren't totally clueless.

"Your writing isn't as good as you think it is, you know," said my Dad to me earlier on the road trip. "Your articles are too long. You need to at least break things up with subheads, or add some pictures, or something. If nobody gets to the bottom of your article, you're wasting time."

It’s all very confusing.

Here are the reasons why I want to:

  • A more offensive version of the Ironbreaker? Considering how uber the defensive version is, I think the Blackguard will be one pimpin’ vehicle of devastation.
  • Tank survivability >>> my Squig Herder’s survivability, so it would be a very nice change of pace and playstyle (melee/tank vs. ranged/dps).
  • Halberd? Check. Heavy armour? Check. AoE capabilities? Check. Emo-goth fuelled by hate vibe? Check.
  • I want to make an/some video(s)
  • They just look so gaddamn wicked!

Here are the reasons why I don’t want to:

  • I’m afraid I will like him too much, but I probably won’t want to start over from scratch. From what I’ve been hearing, T1-T3 zones are pretty unpopulated these days anyway.
  • T1 will likely be a Blackguard/Knight of the Blazing Sun snorefest (imagine 6+ tanks per side; Zzzzz…).
  • I really want to focus on my Squig Herder because he’ll probably be “fixed” by the new patch, or at the very least, buffed up a hella lot.
  • Most of my guild is in T4 right now, though many have alts in T1-T2. It would be great if we could all get to 40, get our Bloodlord/Annihilator sets and then move into the capital city dungeons and beyond.

I will probably make a BG but only raise him up to rank 10-11 so I can shoot some decent oRvR videos (yes, with narration). After that, I’ll toss him aside like all my other alts until Snafzg reaches 40. I hear there’s usually a lot of downtime at 40 because you can’t accomplish much in oRvR with the “broken” zone capture mechanic on our server. I guess we’ll see what happens from there. I can only imagine the oRvR incentives from 1.1 will revitalize the earlier tiers with new players and new alts, so it seems like that would be the ideal time to really level an alt.

That said, I don’t predict reaching 40 before 1.1 - so I may take advantage of it with my main first.

Wouldn’t it be great if there were 28 hours in a day? You could keep the 24 for your normal day-to-day life stuff, including sleep and then spend 4 more on your favorite hobby. I think a lot of European countries have it figured out with their several extra weeks of vacation per year and generally more laid back lifestyle.

Criterion has posted an update about the upcoming Burnout Paradise DLC, Big Surf Island. As you may have guessed, the DLC adds an entirely new island to the world of Burnout Paradise and it features lots of new locations and things to do. For example, you can drive all the way to the top of the cylindrcal tower in the image above. Big Surf Island also hosts a construction yard which is filled with scaffolds and lots of jumps. Criterion also announced that a new vehicle will be released at the same time as Big Surf Island, a dune buggy called the Dust Storm. You can see several locations from Big Surf Island as well as the Dust Storm in the gallery below.

While a specific release date hasn't been announced -- sounds like early next year -- Criterion did announce that Big Surf Island will be premium content, though a specific price has not been revealed.

  • Zu Online v1.5.07 to v1.8.0: In contrast with the previous version, there is a lot of new content in version 1.8.01, which will make the game even more fun. Boundary Hill, the second instance zone of Zu Online has been added. The monsters, especially the boss-level monsters in Boundary Hill are extremely tough, but they drop items that make it all worthwhile. Additionally, another two new high-level zones—Frozen Sea and Wei-Yang Palace have been added. What’s more, we have added several new systems, including Enchanting, pet combination, fashion improvement and the salary system. With the release of the new systems, players can improve their equipment by using the Enchantment function, attach a pet’s attributes to another, add extra attributes to fashionable items and get a weekly salary after meeting certain requirements. We also will improve the Commercial Travel system, add high-level Round Quests and improve some of the game settings. In a word, Zu Online version 1.8.01 will certainly bring players an improved gaming experience in Zu Online.

Hopefully all of you out there have gotten your fill of turkey and all the fixings and are ready to sit back and relax now that the family mayhem has subsided. What better way to do that than to play a couple of PC demos or patch some of your current games? If this sounds good to you, FileFront has plenty to offer this week. They may not help you lose the extra pounds you gained, but they will at least get your mind off of the left overs that your mother sent home with you.

Demos

  • Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: This single-player demo features the game’s cinematic opening, one full campaign mission from both the Soviet and Allied campaigns, and an interactive tutorial. The full game features 3 full campaigns (all playable solo or co-op online), a skirmish mode pitting you against nine formidable commanders, and competitive online multiplayer.
  • StuntMANIA!pro v3.0.0: Fast paced 3D car stunt driving game, where you get to perform the most amazing tricks and stunts in some really cool environments. You can select any of the NINE amazing stunt cars and play either timed games, challenge games or just go crazy and have fun. Are there any limitations in the demo version? Yes.You are limited to playing only one stunt car (Razor), you can only play one environment (Trixter Park) but in both Daytme and Nighttime modes, you cant play AIR SPEED FREAK or BONUS ROUNDUP games, you are unable to save your scores and stunt rankings are not kept for you.   • Zombie Shooter 2: In the sequel Sigma Team strives to put all the best features of Zombie Shooter and Alien Shooter series, player’s needs and suggestions have been listened to, as well as improved gfx, larger variety of enemies, more vehicle types, and more than 50 weapons and accessories.
  • Professor Heinz Wolff`s Gravity: Deep Silver has released a demo for Professor Heinz Wolff’s Gravity. The demo contains a tutorial, as well as five attractive levels with varied degrees of difficulty and gorgeous, hand-painted backgrounds. Just like in the real game, virtual professor Heinz Wolff will provide you with helpful hints. The aim of Professor Heinz Wolff’s Gravity is to place various building blocks correctly in each level, in order to move a ball to a given target point. To that end, players must take the force of gravity into consideration and cleverly place differently shaped objects, so that their physical connection will trigger forces of leverage and chain reactions. The steadily rising learning curve introduces PC and console puzzlers to the easy-to-learn, entertaining principle of the game, and helps them to familiarize themselves with physical and mechanical effects.   • Qwak Demo: Experience super-playable coin-op style action, in this cute platformer, available NOW on your PC.

Patches

  • Zu Online v1.5.07 to v1.8.0: In contrast with the previous version, there is a lot of new content in version 1.8.01, which will make the game even more fun. Boundary Hill, the second instance zone of Zu Online has been added. The monsters, especially the boss-level monsters in Boundary Hill are extremely tough, but they drop items that make it all worthwhile. Additionally, another two new high-level zones—Frozen Sea and Wei-Yang Palace have been added. What’s more, we have added several new systems, including Enchanting, pet combination, fashion improvement and the salary system. With the release of the new systems, players can improve their equipment by using the Enchantment function, attach a pet’s attributes to another, add extra attributes to fashionable items and get a weekly salary after meeting certain requirements. We also will improve the Commercial Travel system, add high-level Round Quests and improve some of the game settings. In a word, Zu Online version 1.8.01 will certainly bring players an improved gaming experience in Zu Online.

  • Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods v1.06 (English): This v1.06 patch fixes the problem with marc when you`ve got Theodors Artefact Quest, as well as fixing some other minor issues. The patch must be applied to a Forsaken Gods Version with Release Patch already installed. Savegames that were made with FSG + Release Patch remain working.

Codemasters has announced DiRT 2 and apparently the game’s going to include loads of off-road events, taking you all over the world and ill have you competing in aggressive multi-car and solo races at a variety of new locations.

New events include the edge-of-control canyon racing of Utah’s “Creek Trailblazer” event, the muddy tracks of the “Rawang Rally Run”, set in the rain forests of Malaysia, and the “Battersea Battle”
of London, where rallycross night races are staged in and around Battersea’s power station, transformed into an industrial amphitheater of racing.

The game will be powered by the third generation of the EGO Engine’s award-winning racing game technology, which will benefit DiRT 2 with a tuned-up car-handling physics system and new and improved damage engine effects.

Expanding on the variety of race styles, players can also expect a wider selection of race formats, inspired by authentic contemporary off-road solo, multi-car, and multi-class racing. “Rallycross” returns for close battling racing in new settings along with “Raid”, the reinvention of DiRT’s Rally Raid, will offer wide open point-to-point stages for multiple competitors to race the heavier off-road
vehicles on terrain filled with natural obstacles. “Trailblazer” is the new hill climb event that will take drivers downhill and there will be faster, more powerful cars to choose from.

Covering seven vehicle classes, gamers will get the keys to powerful vehicles right away.For example: the opening drive in the game is the “Group N Subaru” which essentially takes the ultimate car from the original game and making it the starting point in the sequel. You can also travel the game’s world in your very own RV with “World Tour” and view the races from the windows of it, and while you are traveling around, DiRT 2 will come complete with full online functionality with head-to-head competitive online play and new social features.

DiRT 2 is expected to be released for the Nintendo DS, PC, PSP, PS3, Xbox and Wii sometime in January 2009 and although race fans and gamers lost Colin McRae back in September 2007 during a helicopter crash, his name will still appear on the game as a tribute. Well played Codemasters, you are a class act all the way.

THQ will be releasing Crypto’s latest ’70s inspired and funkified sequel to Big Willy Unleashed on Monday, December 1 for the Xbox 360 when Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon is unleashed upon retail stores.

Sandblast Games have hired Crypto-137 to ignite the disco inferno of the 1970s where our hero is fighting a new enemy hell-bent on destroying the Furon race. To help Crypto along his way, he enlists the guidance of an alien Kung Fu master which provides him with some new powers to save his alien brethren. With an open world format, Path of the Furon gives the player the ability to destroy and cause mayhem in the entire world around him. Five different areas in the air and on the ground give the player many options for exploration and destruction. Your vehicle, a sweet looking UFO, will give Cyrpto new weapons, increased mobility, and the wonderful option of abducting many humans at once. This time around, Crypto will be able to stop time, attract objects, use an array of new weapons as well as the Zap-O-Matic, and play online with a multitude of like minded aliens who just love to abduct, scan, and probe humans to death.
