Recently, Penn Jillete (a comedic genius who does illusionist trickery with his silent partner Teller) illuminated the motivation behind the infamous Desert Bus minigame in the unreleased – but bootlegged – Sega CD title Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors. The purpose of Desert Bus was to recreate the drive from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas Nevada. The point being that it took a hell of a long time and nothing interesting happens along the way. In short, it was a joke, like all of the minigames in the ill-fated title.

In this video, promoting a charity event that utilized the videogame to raise money, Penn says that Desert Bus was created to hit back at Janet Reno, who not only demonized fantasy violence in games, but also said that games should teach people real life skills. Thus, the epic drive from Tuscon to Las Vegas was born and in Penn’s words a “game that was very real life” was created.

After 8 or so hours, if a player managed to keep his hands on the controller long enough, he would reach Las Vegas and score one point. Then the player would be asked to turn around and drive back. The minigame infinitely loops, which is why the Desert Bus charity event was able to carry on for a little over five days.

During the holiday shopping season, it’s more important than ever for games to stand out… in a good way. Here are the covers of this week’s releases and how they fared in our weekly box art reviews…

“Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars” (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: A pair of mouthless, weapon-wielding mushroom men make their way through the treacherous grass, giant snake in tow.
Cons: Are the mushroom men the bad guys or the good guys? Are they going to destroy humanity as we know it?
Pros: It reminds me of movie posters from ’50s sci-fi flicks, like “Them!” (though with less carnage). Still, a very cool aesthetic.
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

“Family Party: 30 Great Games” (Wii)
What the Box Tells Us: A slew of pale-faced avatars enjoy some of the 30 great games, like soccer, log-rolling, log-cutting, archery and rope-climbing.
Pros: There’s quite a variety of activities on the cover.
Cons: Of the 30, these are the best games to showcase? There’s also a baseball, an apple and a brain. Not too exciting. Or great.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

“My Fun Facts Coach” (DS)
What the Box Tells Us: This game will provide “facts for your daily life.”
Pros: It seems you can learn facts about everything from penguins to hot air balloons.
Cons: Some of the squares are cut off. What’s the point of showing half or one-third of a random stock image?
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

“Prince of Persia” (Xbox 360, PS3)
What the Box Tells Us: A man is surrounded by the red and purple headwear he’s donning. One hand is holding a sword and the other looks like a scary claw.
Pros: The box art designers used his scarf as a frame for the cover, focusing your attention on the protagonist and the title.
Cons: The angle he’s leaning at looks like he’s about to fall off of a ledge or trip. I hope there’s someone else around to save him…
Love It or Leave It: Love it.

“Destroy All Humans! Path of the Furon”
What the Box Tells Us: A menacing alien stands at the forefront, while a chaotic alien invasion takes place in Paris and Las Vegas.
Pros: Unlike the aforementioned “Mushroom Men,” it’s pretty clear that the aliens are going to destroy humankind. Humankind donning bell bottoms and shaggy hair.
Cons: If you put this box next to the other three “Destroy All Humans!” titles, I couldn’t tell them apart. Try straying from the formula.
Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

There is a nasty rumor floating around about Warhammer Online. It is said that the famous Vegas loot system, in which your reward is calculated as sum of your contribution and a random roll, is a scam. The contribution part isn't really measured, but just another random roll, making who gets a reward at the end of a public quest or keep capture completely random and independant of contribution. I can't confirm that, because I'm not playing WAR any more, but even the allegation is already a public relations desaster.

We all know how players react to reward systems that don't measure contribution: They minmax the fun out of it, by just doing the minimum to qualify for a reward, and then go to have a coffee and let the other players do the hard work. The same guys who were afk in the cave of Alterac Valley now afk in keep captures and public quests in WAR.

Mythic will have to take serious action to either rectify the situation, or prove that contribution is actually taken into account in the Vegas loot system. WAR is already shrinking at an uncomfortable pace, and can't afford this kind of story. MMORPG players are to a huge extent driven by incentives and rewards, and flawed incentive systems can be absolutely deadly for a game.
Tobold's MMORPG Blog

Star Trek Online is deep under construction as Cryptic Studios prepares for launch with a timeline update.

The latest article brings gamers up to speed on the state of the Romulan Empire after the death of Praetor Shinzon. Romulus and Remus are on the brink of civil war which is a little odd considering Ambassador Spock’s unification movement continues to grow even after his return to Federation space.

Bajor and certain members of the Cardassian government are still at odds requiring the Federation to intervene. If that not enough to keep players busy, there’s a real possibility that the Borg have found a way to recreate a new Borg Queen in the Alpha quadrant. Get all the details in the STO Fiction Update 2381.
