This is it…this is all we get. The guys at 2CH are saying that Nintendo Dream has a big secret to unveil in their February issue…a big Mega Man secret. The only thing to back up that claim is that tiny image/scan above. The 2CH crowd is known to play tricks from time to time…but I sure hope this isn’t one of them.

True Games Interactive, makers of online MMOS have announced a partnership with developer Petroglyph or better known as the folks who brought you Star Wars: Empire at War, by way of a new online action strategy game called Mytheon. This online micro-transaction game will launch in Fall 2009 and combines action, strategy and RPg-gameplay with a heavy emphasis on collectability and combat.

Set within a fantasy universe steeped in unique mythologies from across the globe, players will first embark on a rousing journey through the lore of ancient Greece; with ongoing expansions to follow that will delve into exotic mythologies from the far-flung corners of history. With real-time combat and extensive customization features, Mytheon will offer PVP and solo play as well as an integrated social networking feature set.

“There really isn’t a game on the market today that someone could compare to Mytheon,” said Jeff Lujan, Founder and Chairman of True Games Interactive. “The game truly creates an entirely new genre offering a combination of features that gamers would normally have to play several different games to get. There is no doubt it is an ambitious project, but Petroglyph has routinely delivered AAA quality, genre-defining games and Mytheon continues that pedigree.”

In the game, players will collect and customize a vast assortment of “Power Stones” which are used to conjure devastating spells and summon faithful minions in climactic battles against monsters and other players. Mytheon will offer three distinct character classes, each specializing in a specific “Power Stone” type, such as summoning or healing.

“The passion and energy behind Mytheon has been tremendous at Petroglyph. This is exciting new territory for Petroglyph to explore” said Chuck Kroegel, CEO and General Manager of Petroglyph. “We are making a compelling and addictive new genre that will have you fully immersed and entertained. We couldn’t have asked for a better partner than True Games to take this journey with us and I’m certain that together we’ll deliver a long-lasting new franchise.”

I guess we will find out for ourselves next Fall.

"For the past two months, we here at Blorge have been voting for our choice of greatest game ever made. The results are now in, and so we can unveil the official list of the 'Top 100 best video games of all time', at least according to Blorge readers.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was voted the greatest game of all time by quite a margin, beating Zelda: Ocarina Of Time by over 50 votes. With it being a current generation game, I wonder if it would retain its number one slot if the poll were held in a few years time?
02. Zelda: Ocarina Of Time - 452
03. Final Fantasy VII - 382
04. Halo 3 - 222
05. Call of Duty 4 - 196

Fans of the Colorado-based band DeVotchKa or just fans of their song “How it Ends” featured in the Gears of War 2 launch trailer can now download the song from iTunes come December 1.

Microsoft UK bigwig Stephen McGill stated that “Due to the incredible success of the game in the UK and the insatiable demand for all things GOW2 from fans of the franchise, we’re thrilled to be able to offer consumers the chance to enjoy the track from the new TV ad campaign “How It Ends” as a bona fide single release”.

North Americans who use iTunes have been able to dowload the song for quite some time now, and considering the fact that the album How it Ends was released back in 2004, it’s safe to say that a resurgence in popularity for the band is happening. Not that DeVotchKa really needs a resurgence, because they are a damn good band and always have been. They are not very mainstream, nor can you really pigeonhole them into any sort of musical genre other than the (in my opinion) generic term of “alternative”, they are a very talented band regardless although not something everyone would like.

However, congrats to them on their newest success, and hooray for UK iTunes customers and gamers finally being able to digitally download the tune.

PlayStation Nation,

This is one of the fun parts of my job, when we get to unveil our TV commercials and give you, our loyal fans, a preview of our spots before they hit the airwaves. This year’s campaign is dubbed “Entertainment Unleashed” and for good reason.

The campaign actually began quietly a few weeks back with three fifteen second “tease” executions. Hopefully, you’ve seen these by now. These initial ads depicted various people catching glimpses and reflections of beautiful PS3 game footage magically appearing on building facades across a city.

This weekend, we’re excited to reveal what triggered the excitement. The spot begins with a guy creating a LittleBigPlanet level on a building wall and from there, the PS3 takes on a momentum all its own, spreading amazing entertainment content uncontrollably from building to building throughout the city. The ad prominently features not just LittleBigPlanet but also two other PLAYSTATION 3 exclusive titles — Resistance 2 and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. And we’ve also highlighted PS3’s Blu-ray capability by featuring Blu-ray movies like The Dark Knight, showcasing PS3’s unrivaled leadership as both a gaming and multimedia entertainment experience.

PLAYSTATION 3 offers unrivaled game content, with not just one platform-defining game, but an array of groundbreaking games across virtually every genre throughout the year that are pushing the envelope of creativity and sheer gameplay.

And at the end of the spot, you’ll see that all this great exclusive content has literally been unleashed on the city and its residents. I know our fans will appreciate spotting some of your favorite games across the cityscape.

This week marks an important milestone for the PS3. And one of the things we’re most excited about as we head into year three is the tremendous adoption and excitement found on PlayStation Network. This year alone, we’ve added great new features you guys have been asking for like a service to deliver High Def movies and TV shows that you can rent or buy and store directly on the PS3’s hard drive; a robust trophy system that lets you compare your gaming prowess with others as well as help you discover everything about the great PS3 games you’re playing; and of course, the groundbreaking Home service, which is just around the corner for all. All of this and a lot more has resulted in more than 14 million active PlayStation Network accounts – a very rapid expansion of a service that we have equally aggressive plans for in the future.

So with its tremendous growth and adoption, we thought it was time to give the PlayStation Network its own moment in the sun with a TV spot that sings its praises. This PlayStation Network ad will also make its debut this weekend. The ad is a metaphor and itself depicts the relentless spread of the PlayStation message from user to user. We’ve featured various ways you can “Download/Play/Connect.” Great downloadable games like Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, PAIN, Wipeout HD and Echochrome. Free online gaming and downloadable levels with games like LittleBigPlanet. Human connection and community via Home. And downloading great movies like Hancock directly to your PS3 and then sharing it with your PSP.

When we launched the PS3 two years ago, we said we would deliver on the most advanced next generation console that would offer ten years of entertainment value. We are committed to that promise and remain confident that we’re now just scratching the surface on PS3’s potential.

We hope you like these new ads and look forward to your feedback and continued support for PlayStation.

Enjoy!

Peter

PS: Killzone 2 is real and it’s spectacular…

I finished “Mirror’s Edge” this weekend and played most of the single-player campaign of “Resistance 2.”

The former was a breath of fresh air. It is as much a success as “flOw” in training players to control a game in a smooth meditative move-chaining state. It just ended a bit abruptly.

The latter game, “Resistance 2,” is much more fun than I expected, given the thrashing I heard its campaign receive a couple of 1upyours podcasts ago. I was expecting the campaign to be disappointing. It’s not. While it’s not sparkling with new ideas, it is, like many games from development studio Insomniac, a triumph of artwork and engineering. Visually, it’s a stunner and it plays smoothly, a first-person shooter with an unending horde of impressive enemies through which to shoot and crunch.

There is plenty that Insomniac can do better with a third game, but I was struck when starting “Resistance 2″ this weekend by how much they, like most development studios, are victims to comparisons they cannot control. New games must suffer from the fact that they are released alongside other new games. This issue afflicts “Resistance 2.” For me, that made “Grand Theft Auto IV” seem a little less free-wheeling and fun because I happened to be wrapping up the free-wheeling and fun “Super Mario Galaxy” when I started Rockstar’s drama. In the case of “Resistance 2,” the fact that I came to it just after finishing “Mirror’s Edge” made the standard FPS control of my character in Insomniac’s game feel sluggish.

In a post “Mirror’s Edge” world I now want my FPS characters to be able to really run. I want them to make a leap at a chain link fence and clamber over it. I want to push forward on the left analog stick and feel momentum take over. “Resistance” hero Nathan Hale may not be a free-runner, but a soldier should have better agility than he exhibits. I want my character’s eyeline to turn before their body turns, rather than the whole thing swivel like a robot torso. And in a post “Gears of War 2” world, I don’t want to have to take cover without being able to snap to it and duck out to pick my shots.

It’s unfair to compare a new game to the other new games that were being made at the same time. The developers of holiday game A can’t really be expected to have absorbed the lessons already from holiday games B and C. But these comparisons are the easiest and most likely ones for me and other gamers to make. It’s a bitter lesson all studios must have absorbed by now, that a team can spend its energy improving the model it previously made while never quite knowing what the competition is about to unveil elsewhere on the showroom floor.

All that said, team Insomniac has got to know that their “Resistance” Bullseye gun still isn’t as cool or functional as the “Perfect Dark” CMP150, which is now eight years old. Laster-tagging and auto-shooting multiple targets beats tagging and shooting just one. Where’s the progress there?

Next: I expect to finish “R2″ tonight and then give “Spider-Man: Web of Shadows” a try. Is it worth it?
