Beyond the jump we have a cracking new character-introduction type trailer for Dawn of War II. It shows off the special abilities of the core units in the space marine chapter, The Blood Ravens. Lots of in-game footage, and some spectacular assault-marine jetpack air-stomps. Getting fairly excited about this game now.

Professor Laytons third DS adventure easily tops the Japanese charts, outselling nearest rival PES 2009 (or Winning Eleven in Japan) by 2:1, and knocking previous leader Animal Crossing: City Folk...

Professor Layton’s third DS adventure easily tops the Japanese charts, outselling nearest rival PES 2009 (or Winning Eleven in Japan) by 2:1, and knocking previous leader Animal Crossing: City Folk down to third spot. Crosso suffers a serious hit to its sales, with a drop to 108,547 units this week - no news on whether that’s down to low stock, or perhaps it could be that the Japanese are realising just how similar it is to the DS game (or indeed that it’s better suited to handheld play).

Elsewhere, Chrono Trigger hangs in there in fourth position, though in the lower positions it’s the PSP show, Sony’s handheld proving very popular in the east at the moment. Yet in the hardware charts, DSi still rules the roost. Though with such impressive software sales - and for some pretty hardcore-friendly titles too - the PSP is proving a worthy competitor. That particular battle is going to rage on well into next year. Meanwhile, Wii continues to outsell its home console rivals, though the PS3 had a strong week again - whether that will start to catch up as 2009 goes on remains to be seen, but with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom out next week, I expect a sales spike for Wii as we head into the festive period.

The full charts follow:

1. NDS - Layton 3 - 347,360 / NEW
2. PS3 - PES 2009 - 168,405 / NEW
3. WII - Animal Crossing - 108,547 / 413,727
4. NDS - Chrono Trigger - 80,157 / 351,025
5. PSP - Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force 3 - 64,179 / NEW
6. PSP - Gundam vs. Gundam - 56,557 / 323,489
7. NDS - Kirby Superstar Ultra - 56176 / 474,749
8. PSP - Kenka Banchou 3 - 53,966 / NEW
9. PSP - Musou Orochi: Maou Sairin - 45,809 / NEW
10. PSP - Higurashi Daybreak - 32,639 / NEW

Hardware

Elven Legacy, the sequel to Fantasy Wars, is promising to deliver a world filled with magic and a nonlinear storyline, gauged to provide many hours of gameplay for strategy fans or just fans of Fantasy Wars. Through an epic quest aimed to restore the former glory of the Elven race, the game promises both depth and scope, and from the looks of the new screens we just go in–a colorful and inspirational one at that.

In the game you an play for elves or humans in two primary campaigns or for the orcs in a wide variety of bonus missions. Using the accompanying tools players may create their own missions and campaigns and share them in multiplayer mode.

The game features a new Elven race along with new opponents; unique character talents, spells and artifacts; improved AI (one of my beefs with Fantasy Wars) additional maps for multiplayer mode, role development of characters and units, and various tactical opportunities.

Elven Legacy is expected to be released sometime in March 2009, so until then check out the very pretty screens for the game here and here. I am hoping that they fixed all the bad things about Fantasy Wars this time around, because I am really wanted to give it a try.

Speaking at the Reuters Media Summit in New York this week, Shane Kim confessed that Microsoft's Magic 8-Ball is as broken as everyone else's magic crystals, bird baths, mirrors and good old wild guesses have been during these volatile times. The VP was optimistic about the games industry in general, though, suggesting that consumers are "still looking for entertainment," specifically, of the stay-at-home variety. Despite walloping Black Friday sales in the U.S. and a record month in Europe, Kim remained concerned about 2009's outlook. "Who knows, maybe flat performance will be considered a remarkable achievement," Kim prayed aloud. Amen?

Meanwhile, Sony shucked word of Microsoft's dominant November and took a thunderous lead in the back-and-forth shouting match for the European crown. "I am confident that in PAL territories our installed base is 300,000 units ahead of Xbox 360," SCEE president David Reeves insisted to MCV, adding, "No we are not going to go down in price; neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either." So there.

Source - Microsoft cautiously optimistic about Xbox sales [Reuters]
Source - Xbox 360 enjoys highest sales month ever in Europe [GI.biz]
Source - Sony: We're ahead of Xbox [MCV]
Microsoft optimistic as Xbox 360 has record Euro month; Sony claims overall lead originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 14:26:00 EST.
Valve is one of those select few companies in the games industry that, for one reason or another, you just want to succeed. We're not talking purely about the rampant fanboyism you see for the big three, either.

Valve's become a force to be reckoned with, and there's a simple explanation for why that is: the company produces stellar games, its founders are vocal and speak out against DRM, and there's a massive amount of fan service being thrown about.

How then, does this positive attitude translate to actual sales? Valve has finally decided to release the retail sales figures for the vast majority of its games (no Steam sales included, sadly), and the results may surprise you.

Gamasutra has got all of the numbers, but here are some of the more interesting ones: Half-Life (9.3 million units), Half-Life 2 (6.5 million), Counter-Strike (4.2 million), Orange Box (3 million), and lastly Left 4 Dead, which is estimated to fall between 3.6 - 3.9 million units sold.

Remember, this data does not include digital download sales which, judging by how popular Steam has grown to be, would have a significant impact. Still, it's always neat to see companies give out the raw data like this, isn't it?

[Thanks, Jetsetlemming]

With the success of the DSi, the DS as a platform has now amassed 24,239,590. This figure includes the DS, the DS Lite, and now the DSi. For comparison's sake, the DS Lite sold 550,000 units during its first month in Japan.

Makes sense, seeing as Media Create has been reporting big numbers for DSi sales, particularly last week.
