On Tuesday we reported that Jack Black will host the Spike Video Game Awards, an event that will host gameplay footage premieres of some major titles.

But, you asked, what about the painted naked women? How could they not be returning? I got an answer.

Last year, winners of VGA awards were announced in a novel way. Instead of a piece of paper being produced from an envelope, a nearly naked woman painted to resemble or suggest a specific video game was produced on stage.

I spoke with Spike TV veteran and VGA executive producer Casey Patterson about this today and was told that the painted women won’t be back. But, she reminded me, Spike is a guy’s channel. You know what that means: “For any Spike show we do know that guys want to see beautiful ladies.” So beautiful ladies will be back. And it sounds like they might be wearing wings. One of the aspects of the show will be the creation of a gamer’s heaven with some “heavenly ladies” presenting awards.

Like all of that or not, gamers should note that this year’s show is designed to be more of a gamers’ show. Patterson said that the VGAs were originally pegged to be a gaming awards show with a celebrity focus. Not any more. “It’s less about celebrities [this year,]” Patterson said. “It’s more about world premieres.”

The VGA Awards will air on Spike on December 14.

A portion of a Gamasutra interview with producer Koichi Yamaguchi…

GS: How do you think the DS market is doing? The DS is famous for pulling in non-gamers, but it’s unclear whether many of that audience buys games with a narrative structure, as opposed to just sticking with Brain Age, at least in the U.S. Are you hoping Again will be the title that changes that for you?

KY: We’re very much aware that Brain Age, even in the States, when it was released, was what sort-of triggered this casual gaming audience, and the DS being accepted as not just a gaming platform, but as an entertainment device. It was very similar in Japan, too; once that game came out, every family member was playing that game, and very similar games; you would see people commuting with DSes in their hands.

But it seems like, after that, a lot of people actually haven’t had a chance to play anything that is equally as entertaining, or is equally addicting, so it seems like the DSes are stashed away in their closets. So, hopefully, a game like Again would be something that they would seek out of interest, and from a game concept standpoint, we’re trying to have this mystery-solving, crime-solving series.

It doesn’t have to be a game, but anyone would be interested in that kind of entertainment, whether it be a novel, or a movie, or a TV series. So, you have a sense of comfort, you know, reading through a series of chapters of murder mysteries. So, hopefully, that concept of Again, which it just so happens we are developing on the DS, would make sense for them to bring out their DSes again — this time wanting to play an adventure game.

Also, Tecmo’s U.S. VP John Inadala states that they will not be localizing Winds of Nostalgio…

JI: Well, as far as if it’s going to be published in North America or not, right now we have no plan. We reviewed the game, and we decided that it was not the right game to bring to North America. We might change our mind…

Some thought that 3D rendering would be limited to a few niche games, while the majority would stick to two dimensions. In the eyes of value-critical consumers, the Dreamcast looked like a crippled game box going up against the DVD-based, multimedia-rich PS2. But in time, all things change.

Going into the next generation, buying a remote pointer-less console may seem ... well, pointless. There are a lot of change-resistant "hard core" gamers out there pouting over the inevitable evolution of their controllers, but there's just no denying it anymore. Motion-sensing controllers are the wave of the future.
A few weekends ago I was setting up my new TV, connecting all my consoles, set top boxes, and my PC to it, moving from remote to remote and then to mouse and keyboard, when it dawned on me that Nintendo really hit the nail on the head with the Wii Remote. In the home theaters of the future, it's going to seem downright awkward to interact with your display by sliding a mouse across a surface, when it feels so much more natural and intuitive to instead point a remote at the screen. And awkward is just how I felt in that instance.

I've occasionally used my Wii Remote with GlovePIE to move the mouse cursor on my computer, but before the Wii debuted, the idea of moving a remote through the air to control your PC seemed almost silly. But Gyration was marketing an air mouse that did just that. Unfortunately, using just a gyroscope and accelerometer to track motion meant that there was no relative position data available. You had to click the trigger button to tell the mouse pointer to move.

Nintendo may have taken inspiration from Gyration, because as early as 2001, the two companies were working together to design a new gaming interface. Although our Wiimotes would ultimately be based on different sensor technologies, some of the money Nintendo invested in R&D with Gyration may have paid off in the development of the form factor and break-apart design. It looks like after a few more years of research, Gyration's rigid "side car" add-on concept had evolved into the far more flexible Nunchuk.

In 2007, Logitech, maker of numerous gaming, media, and productivity peripherals introduced the MX Air, which improves upon the gyroscopic air mouse by using a MEMS gyroscope similar to the one inside the MotionPlus, but with one axis less. To address the issue of having no reference point to move against, the MX Air has a button to recenter your movement. I've used this trick for a few GlovePIE scripts, and I have to say, using the Sensor Bar as a reference point beats the pants off it.

The Darwin by Motus Games, has frequently been rumored as Microsoft's answer to the Wiimote, despite Microsoft having never confirmed any association with Motus or development of a motion controller. Just one look and it's easy to see how those rumors spread, as the Darwin apparently shops at the same clothier as the Xbox 360. The supposed codename for Microsoft's motion controller is "Newton," presumably in reference to Sir Isaac Newton, whose Three Laws of Motion were the basis of scientific and technological advancement for centuries. And from the name association, we could also infer that such a device, imaginary as it may or may not be, would detect gravitational and/or inertial forces. The Darwin does that by using an accelerometer and gyroscope, giving it characteristics similar to a MotionPlus-equipped Wiimote.

Is the Darwin the fabled Newton? Maybe some day we'll find out. No demonstrations have shown the Darwin moving a cursor across the screen, or aiming a gun in a shooter, so it may need some supplementary technology to give it the complete controlling functionality of our Wiimotes. If there's one thing Microsoft wouldn't want to skimp on supporting, it's the shooters.

Although some suspect the Darwin could alternatively be under development for Sony (and a change of clothes adds credence to that rumor), there's another motion-sensing controller under development that has been associated with the PS3, perhaps only because of similar nomenclature. The TrueMotion technology being developed by Sixense, is actually far more interesting than Sony's SIXAXIS.

Sixense TrueMotion is probably the next best thing to a MotionPlus-equipped Wiimote. It's got relative positioning with a magnetic field emitter as your reference point. But instead of accelerometers or gyroscopes, the magnetic field emitter acts like a fully functioning "sensor bar" to pick up the varied motions and positioning of the controller.

It's like playing a theremin, but instead of music coming out as you move your hand through the X, Y, and Z axes of the magnetic field, those coordinates are transmitted to the computer and used to move a mouse pointer, aim a gun, or swing a racket.

Sixense could potentially offer more freedom than the Wiimote's Sensor Bar, because you don't have to point the controller directly at it to get relative positioning data. The limitations of using a magnetic field still remain to be seen.

The Wiimote has so many functions, any rival company attempting to emulate it faces a daunting task. If Sony and Microsoft want to upgrade their controllers to the new gen, they'll be challenged to design or license alternate technologies and build them into a uniquely styled remote of their own. As gaming consoles take over the home theater and change the way we interface with technology, we may begin to expect more from all of our other remotes.

Every other week, Mike Sylvester brings you REVOLUTIONARY, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities.

From an accelerometer, to an infrared camera, to a speaker, the Wii Remote is so packed full of features and tech, it's hard to imagine what an upgrade would look like for the next generation. In Ubisoft Montreal's latest installment of the Prince of Persia series a new hero is paired with a magical Princess named Elika. As the two battle against an evil darkness that takes over the Persian landscape, an ancient force becomes usable by Elika. Essentially, Elika acts as the navigation, safety net and even transportation to the player. Check out this video which showcases each of the four main abilities Elika can use to help you access new areas in Prince of Persia.

Make sure to check out our Prince of Persia launch coverage, including our extensive review.
X3F TV -- Prince of Persia: Elika's Abilities originally appeared on Xbox 360 Fanboy on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 11:45:00 EST.
"Console Vendors & OTT Delivery: Let the Games Begin!" is the latest report from The Diffusion Group, a research and consulting team. Their 49-page report points to consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 as the future of on-demand video.

"Rising dissatisfaction with service value, the lack of flexibility implicit in tiered strategies, and a growing interest in watching online video on the TV have combined to create a unique opportunity for alternative video services -- an opportunity not at all lost on console vendors."

"Microsoft and Sony know that today’s console gamers are perfectly suited for new TV offerings," says Dixon. "The segment is dominated by males between the ages of 18 and 35 -- a prized advertising demographic -- with little sense of loyalty to their 'local' cable or telephone company. They are also heavy viewers of online video and quite comfortable spending money for online digital media," says report co-author Colin Dixon.

The group predicts that 190 million households will have a video-ready console in their homes by 2012, and 80 percent of them will be connected to the internet. They think that 75 percent of the connected will use video streaming services.

Dixon adds, "Simply stated, console vendors are inimitably positioned for success in the OTT (over-the-top) space because their gaming audience already owns the enabling device, and they are highly likely to already have an Internet-to-TV relationship with the vendor."

[Via Gamasutra]
