As promised, Amazon kicked off their all-Wii Gold Box deals last night, with $25.98 copies of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The Gold Box deals so far include:
  • $10 Namco Museum Remix (gone, but that's probably okay!)
  • $40 Disney Sing It bundle with mic (expired, but that's probably okay!)
  • $10 Trauma Center: New Blood (out of stock!)
  • $20 We Ski
The announced Gold Box deals aren't the only discounted Wii offerings at Amazon today. As part of their "15 Days, 15 Deals" promotion, they've marked down all kinds of Wii games and accessories to ridiculous prices. We've wanted to buy a Balance Board cover for a while, but held off out of an interest in not feeling stupid for paying twenty dollars for one. $2.98 sounds about right! The promotion also includes $40 Active Life: Outdoor Challenge, $20 We Love Golf, and discounts on the Wii Fit Energy Pack (see our impressions!), replacement Wii AC adapters, and maraca shells.

Seaman Developer Reveals Gabo
"As with Seaman 2, this iPhone title charges you with rearing a 'Peking Man' named Gabo, allowing you to act as a god and alter his island environment to influence his growth. Unlike past Seaman titles, however, you probably won’t use a specialized microphone to command Gabo. Instead, you’ll likely just use the iPhone touchscreen."

Gameloft Announces Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes, Hero of Sparta
"Hour of Heroes will use a virtual directional pad for movement, with elements like ducking for cover and jumping over obstacles handled automatically by the game. Hero of Sparta also uses a virtual D-pad for contextual options like hitting, defending, and changing weapons."

Developer Diary 3: Pay the price

Touchgrind in App Store
"Illusion Labs, the studio that has seen almost 4.5 million downloads with its maze game Labyrinth, just released a multi-touch fingerboarding title called Touchgrind. The game allows players to use the touchscreen to execute a variety of tricks with an on-screen skateboard, such as ollies, shuvits, kickflips, heelflips, smithgrinds, boardslides, and more, along with combinations of those moves."

Presumably, game designer Kenichi Nishi, whose credits include Chibi-Robo! and Incredible Crisis, is returning to develop the game along with composer Kenji Eno."

SimCity Coming December
"The EA Mobile title has the “look and feel” of SimCity 3000, but with touchscreen controls for tasks like zoning. Players can also use the platform’s multi-touch capabilities for zooming in and out of cities, as well as other functions."

Uno now in App Store
"Gameloft has added classic card game Uno to the App Store, taking advantage of the platform’s touchscreens and allowing players to drag and drop cards to get rid of their hands as easily as possible."

Cube now in App Store, Free
"Fernlightning’s first-person shooter Cube is finally on the App store, over six weeks after the company submitted the iPhone/iPod Touch game to Apple for review. Billed as a technology demo, the opensource title is available for free and includes multiplayer support, in-game editing, cooperative editing, demo recording, and more."

What if you received tomorrow's Japanese hardware sales figures ... today?

We're not exactly certain what parallels we can draw between our humble weekly feature and the short-lived CBS soothsaying series Early Edition, but it was the only clever theme we could attach to this particular post which is, in fact, a day early. If you could somehow use this information save someone's life this evening, it would certainly help our allusional plight. We considered forcing an orange tabby cat through the internet and onto your front porch to recreate a theme from the show, but decided against it as the cost would be tremendous, and the trauma inflicted to said kitty would be, well, unsurvivable.

Here's the news, sans mutilated feline: The DSi, despite experiencing a drop customary to the weeks following a frenzied console launch, remains king of the hill. The software figures for the week follow suit -- three of the top five games belong to Nintendo's handheld, with Kirby Super Star Ultra taking first place. However, the vacuous pink puff ball was unable to save the DS Lite, whose sales were cut in half this week, netting it a last-place finish -- just as prophecy foretold.

Atari's latest attempt to restart the Alone in the Dark franchise may have been disappointing at $50, but we can't help but wonder how much less disappointing it is as a $10 game. The lowered expectations that come with the price may be just the thing! If you only had enough interest in the game to justify spending that amount, chances are you've rented it already. If not, today's Amazon Deal of the Day may interest you. For today only, they've dropped the price of the Wii (and PS2) Alone in the Dark to $9.98.

If cheap Atlus games are your thing, and if you have yet to hear about this, Amazon also currently has a bunch of Atlus games on sale for $19.96, including Dokapon Kingdom, Trauma Center: New Blood, and Baroque on the Wii.

The third-parties-on-Wii debate has raged for longer than we care to remember. In fact, we now counter accusations that the console lacks great third-party titles with the same, well-rehearsed response: "de Blob Zack & Wiki Resident Evil 4 World of Goo The Conduit No More Heroes Little King's Story Blast Works LostWinds Fire Emblem Guitar Hero World Tour Okami Boom Blox Let's Tap Geometry Wars Muramasa Mega Man 9 Trauma Center." It's a bit lacking in coherency and punctuation, but people usually edge away when we shout it in their faces.

Nintendo bossman Reggie Fils-Aime (who is earning a reputation for frankness) is the latest industry figure to question the Wii's third-party output, suggesting that third-parties don't yet understand the platform. He reckons people who purchase Wiis are interested in games that sell strongly on other systems, but that the quality is missing. "I will be able to say our licensees 'get it' when their very best content is on our platform," he told Forbes. "And with very few exceptions today, that's not the case."
