Ubisoft gave us the opportunity to get our hands on the Nintendo DS version of Prince of Persia: The Fallen King a few weeks back, and it was pretty surprising.

Not because the game was good or bad -- I'll withold my judgments until I get some more time with it. I was surprised because the game is controlled entirely using the stylus. Tapping the screen would move the adorable little super-deformed Prince, tapping would cause him to attack, tapping and holding would make him defend; tapping walls would make him hop on them. Tap, tap, tap ... tap.

There's a lot of tapping going on in The Fallen King, which is an interesting choice for what essentially seemed like an action/puzzle/platformer. I played through the first area of the game, all the way up through a magical boss that kept dropping things on my head (I tapped furiously to best him, of course). Based on my short play session, I'm ambivalent about the title -- not particularly thrilled about it, but it seems solid enough.

The good news is that I felt the same way about the console version of Prince of Persia when I played it earlier this year. And, well, we saw how that turned out.

Square Enix is bringing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time to North America for the Nintendo DS and Wii. In the game, players can choose to play alone or with friends, whenever and however they like with the introduction of a new concept which will enable users of either Nintendo platform to adventure alongside each other for the first time. Maintaining the control scheme found in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates and enhancing the gameplay experience, Echoes of Tome has a system that promises to allow players to switch between the single and multiplayer modes in-game.

Using a new technology called the “Pollux Engine”, this is a true cross-platform game as it will be identical on both NDS and Wii, down to the last detail. Use the stylus to control your character on the NDS while the Wiimote will mimic the same actions when used on the Wii. The game requires only one copy of the game to work on both systems.

The storyline tells the tale of a triumphant return from a monster-infested forest, which takes place during a 16-year-old hero’s coming-of-age ceremony. However, the hero’s joy is short-lived as a young village girl is found to be afflicted by a mysterious illness known as “crystal sickness.” Determined to obtain the cure, the hero steps out of the secluded village for the first time, only to discover a world in which crystals are merely artifacts of the past and no longer exist.

Game Features:

Multiplayer connectivity reaches new heights where players can team up or compete with friends and players around the world

The control scheme introduced in FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: Ring of Fates returns, now adapted to Wii

Players can switch between single and multiplayer modes within the game world itself, giving them two gaming options in one integrated experience

A personalized hero can be generated from a choice of the four familiar races of the series; Clavats, Lilties, Selkies or Yukes. Players joining from the Wii can also introduce their Miis to the world.

Create and customize materials, armor and equipment for characters with tailored appearances and abilities so that no two heroes will be the same

A vast selection of quests which will give the player more to do even after completion of the main adventure

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time is expected to be released in Spring 2009. For more information, check out the game page on FileFront where you can download a trailer for the game. You can also check out the official website here, which unfortunately does not have much more than “coming soon” on the front page.

AURORA: Set near the North Pole, the Aurora World adds gusty winds to the mix that can blow your fireworks off course. If the sparks and bullets become too thick, create a vortex to suck them in by drawing a spiral with your stylus. Use this temporary upgrade as you make your way through the all of the world’s levels to the Rock n’ Roll Walrus boss. Keep your eyes on the snowfall to determine the wind direction. Using the Vortex will also absorb your debris, allowing you to fire at will. Certain ice blocks can be shot at, or can be shattered with a tap of the stylus. During the boss battle, watch out for danger from the bottom of the screen. World Upgrade: Vortex: Quickly draw a spiral on the touch screen to create the Vortex. Use it to absorb enemy fire when the going gets tough. Remember to let it recharge between shots. Also, upgrades, permanent or otherwise, cannot be used during boss battles!

The moment that former Electronic Arts executive Neil Young held an iPhone, he knew change was coming.

That feeling was so strong that he left his post at EA over the summer and formed an iPhone-only gaming company called ngmoco:).

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer over the phone yesterday, Young compared his experiences with the iPhone to working on both the Wii and DS.

“If you think about the games that were successful, have been successful on the Wii — and it’s also true of the DS — they’re games that have kind of been built from the interface out,” said Young. “And by successful I mean both from a critical standpoint but also a commercial standpoint.”

“I just read Jeremy Parish’s [story] on 1UP on iPhone gaming,” he continued, “and he was talking about when the DS started to accelerate as a platform was when designers started to do more than just port the old games over, try to map some hokey extension with the stylus and started really building games that specifically took advantage of the stylus. I think that’s true on the iPhone here, too. We’re just at the very, very beginning.”

One of the reasons some publishers started supporting the Wii early on was lowered development costs. Building a Wii title was far cheaper than the same scale on Xbox 360 or PlayStation. Young views iPhone development the same way.

“The development expense is just very different,” he said. “You’re spending a lot less money so you can afford to take a lot more risks in what you’re building.”

ngmoco:) has several iPhone games out and more coming soon. “Rolando,” a “Loco Roco”-style platformer with accelerometer controls, looks very promising.

They think they’re so special, what with their cute little walk and funny bobbing head and annual death-defying journey across the pitiless frozen deserts of Antarctica, during which they abandon the safety of the ocean to journey to their traditional breeding grounds in the middle of a region so desolate, so bleak and perilous, it supports no other form of life. God, how I’ve hoped and prayed I would one day get a chance to take them down a peg. And now it’s happening. It’s finally happening. So, let’s do this. Let’s punch an emperor penguin in the face!

What’s that you say? It’s a crested penguin?

Well. I don’t really have anything against crested penguins, now do I Gammick, makers of the upcoming Animal Boxing for the Nintendo DS? Thank goodness you’ve included a whole host of animals in your beastial boxer, each just begging to have their furry asses handed to them on behalf of everyone who’s ever had a goat talk behind their back at work, a bear cut them in line at Starbucks, or a snowy egret shoot them the feather in traffic. It seems Animal Village was once a peaceful community where cats, dogs, lions and lambs all lived in perfect harmony, that is until the opening of a new boxing gym reminded them of their primal natures. Now it is up to you and your furious fists to show these creatures why humans, and sometimes dingoes depending on the size of the human, occupy the top rung of the food chain.

As if beating more than 50 different barnyard critters within an inch of their darling little lives weren’t gimmick enough, you also play the game by turning your DS upside down, using the the stylus to punch them in the cock! Hit the jump for a picture.

I am disappointed in you, I really am. But seriously, until they make the Cock Puncher movie for real, its Animal Boxing for the win.

Okay, just a quick impressions piece before I start what’s going to hopefully become a regular feature this Friday - a diary documenting my progress in Animal Crossing: City Folk/Let’s Go To The City.

The first thing I noticed is that everything seems bigger, somehow. That’s probably because I’ve upgraded my telly since I first played the GameCube game several years back, but this has definitely had a graphical lick of paint since then - it looks sharper, characters look smoother and nicer, and the font used in speech bubbles when animals chat to you is definitely superior - nice and big and chunky. Good stuff.

Less good is the fact that to all extents and purposes this is near-identical to the Animal Crossing you’re all familiar with - whether you’ve played the DS or GC versions. In fact, it seems like a bit of a hybrid of the two at times, obviously more closely resembling the GC game but with the DS’s rolling world rather than flick-screen scrolling. Moreover you still work off the first part of your mortgage at Tom Nook’s, and he gives you the same jobs you may well have done twice before. Sigh. I’m running out of witty slogans for his shop after three attempts.

I’ve only just ordered the Wii Speak accessory from the US, so I can’t comment on the voice chat yet - not that I know anyone else with the game anyway - so hopefully that will improve the social side of things, which was a little limited in the DS version. The interface here works better than in the Cube game, but is obviously a little slower and less intuitive than the stylus-based menuing in Wild World. There’s a nice screenshot-taking feature, but the pics are generally horribly compressed - presumably to save space. I’ve squidged the one above down to fit the blog, so it doesn’t look too bad, but don’t expect them to look great on your PC - they’re more suited to viewing on a Wii when you send them to friends.

Perhaps the most irritating thing so far is the loading when you venture inside and back out - it’s only a matter of a few seconds, but compared to the instant loads in the previous games, this seems pretty unforgiveable. It’s not as if it can be processing that much more info, surely?

Time will only tell whether this proves to be the best AC yet, but despite the loading issue, it looks like it could be the most polished yet simultaneously disappointing iteration yet. I won’t be reviewing this for a while, as it deserves a significant time investment - and a look at the DLC - before it can be fairly judged. But stay tuned for those diary entries!

Let’s go ahead and get the sheep-related jibes out of the way:

This is a baaaaaaaad game.
Play it too long, and it’ll put you to sleep.
Keep sailing, Argonauts. No golden fleece here.

I would’ve worked these gems into the review, but Shaun the Sheep, an adventure title developed by Art Co. and based on the popular British children’s show of the same name, isn’t that bad. A simple and underwhelming game, yes, as most children’s titles are, but there is some entertainment to be had.

The show is produced by Aardman Animations, the studio responsible for the lovable, Plasticine adventures of Wallace & Gromit. It focuses on the intelligent, creative, human-like sheep Shaun and his slapstick escapades in a barnyard. The whistle-blowing sheepdog Bitzer, the plain, unassuming Farmer and the clumsy, daft sheep that make up the rest of the Flock provide plenty of comic situations, while the Naughty Pigs’ mockery, cruelty and scheming make for a good foil. The episodes are very reminiscent of the silent films of the early twentieth century, as there is no spoken dialogue whatsoever (there are sheep bleets, human grumbles and other sound effects, of course) and the comedy is often physical in nature.

The game does a great job in terms of atmosphere. The characters and environments look a lot like their television counterparts, and the animations retain some of that distinctive stop-motion charm, while the music and effects are cutesy in an appropriate way and recognizable to any series fans.

Plotwise, the game isn’t nearly as intriguing as the show. In fact, it can be fairly called “barebones.” The television episodes, one featuring a round of football with a head of cabbage and another a barnyard rave, are mindblowing adventures compared to the game’s rather boring task of finding fifteen sheep before the Farmer returns. Also, sadly, the humor and personality of the show are mostly lost. There are bits here and there, especially in the last, sheep-launching minigame, but not enough to keep the average person playing.

The controls are sharp enough, a non-issue. Moving Shaun around is merely a matter of steering with the stylus, and interacting with the world’s objects is just a tap or two away. The whole game runs smoothly on all fronts, with no technical distractions whatsoever. But, as with the Wii, the unique features of the DS aren’t often capitalized on, and Shaun the Sheep is a firm example of this. The top screen is typically either a static map of Shaun’s location or an image of Shaun and the like mugging to the player, and the microphone and stylus interactions are particularly shallow.

The gameplay, following this shallowness, is patently uninspired. The story mode is essentially a stringing together of gather and fetch quests: finding a certain number of sheep, using Item A on slot B, et cetera. The occasional minigames break up the monotony with plenty of WarioWare-esque microphone-blowing, rapid-tapping and so on, but they’re quite unsophisticated and far too easy to pass. Again, this is primarily a children’s game, but there’s still far too much handholding and dumbing down going on. Or perhaps I give today’s youth too much credit… As for the minigame and collection modes, they are exactly what you think they are: simply components of the story mode set off for quick access and playability.

There isn’t a lot here for older gamers, even older viewers of the television program, as the game isn’t particularly compelling or addictive. I can certainly imagine that the kids who enjoy Shaun the Sheep on the CBBC or Disney Channel will enjoy this for a short while, but the rest of us will find more fun and excitement out of watching the program or - better yet - seeing a few Wallace & Gromit shorts.

And, to answer your burning question, no, the game will not sync up with a similarly titled Pink Floyd song, although that certainly would’ve been an excellent selling point!

+

Good atmosphere (graphics, animation, music and sound effects)

Tight, responsive controls

Appealing to children and family-friendly

-

Unremarkable implementation of DS features (touchscreen, top screen, microphone, et cetera)

Uninspired gameplay (fetch quests, been-there-done-that minigames, et cetera)

Humor and personality of the show are mostly lost

Oh economy, quit being such a wet blanket. You don't see video game publishers crying as they dip into their retirement accounts, do you? No sir. At least not according to Reuters, which reports the industry expects strong game sales through the remainder of this year and into 2009 in spite of the frowny faces on Wall Street.

Industry execs painted a mostly rosy outlook during yesterday's BMO Capital financial conference in New York. Overall, Microsoft exec Mindy Mount stated that she feels the game industry will "hold up a lot better than other industries," while Take Two's Strauss Zelnick admitted that such prosperity will likely only come to those companies with big titles under the tree.

Some, such as EA's Peter Moore, came away speaking words of "cautious optimism" in the face of the economic uncertainty, sentiment echoed by Nintendo's always vocal Reggie Fils-Aime. Though like a motion sensitive King Midas with a gold-encrusted stylus in one hand and a bag of money in the other, he told Reuters that while "cautiously optimistic is quite appropriate" overall, from Nintendo's ivory tower, the view is "very optimistic."
Industry execs foresee bright holiday despite dim economy originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Nov 2008 21:00:00 EST.
