The DS offers a new way for adventure fans to immerse themselves into the fascinating storyline of the award-winning Syberia:

For Kate Walker, a sophisticated New York Attorney, the Voralberg Toy Company acquisition seemed like an easy task: a quick stop-over to a small alpine village in France to buy-out an old toy factory, then straight back home to New York. But deep in the alpine valleys, Kate uncovers a secret which starts her on a fascinating quest of discovery. Due to an unexpected twist, her business trip quickly becomes a journey across land and time throwing all she values into question, while the deal she set out to sign becomes a pact with destiny…

There are no buttons on the iPhone*. That should stop most console-style games from working on the device, despite power comparable to the PSP.

That didn’t stop Gameloft from bringing the “Brothers in Arms” series to Apple’s handheld, however, and I have good news to report: it actually works.

I booted “Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes” with low expectations. The game promised dual analog controls on a device with no analog sticks.

No way, I said! Yet, it works. Here’s how:

*When we say iPhone, we also mean iPod Touch, unless noted.

The iPhone “Brothers in Arms” moves the perspective to third person, a viewpoint found in the console “Brothers in Arms” when you line up against cover. The aiming has been simplified — you need only hover the reticule somewhat near an enemy and auto-aim takes cares of the rest — but character movement has been kept intact.

Because the iPhone’s screen is multi-touch, Gameloft has included a way to move and aim at the same time. With one finger, you look around the environment. Movement is a little trickier. In the bottom-left-hand side, there’s a small circle simulating an analog stick. By moving your thumb ever so slightly, it’s possible to run ‘n gun, thanks to the game’s auto-aim. By all expectations, it shouldn’t work.

But it does, and it works extremely well. By the end of the tutorial, I was zipping around the war zone without trouble. Despite Gameloft’s inventive use of the touch screen, however, they can’t get around the downsides that come with it. You will constantly be blocking what’s in front of you with your finger. Once you become accustomed to the auto-aim, it’s not such a big deal.

It’s ambitious that Gameloft attempted to re-create the authentic “Brothers in Arms” on the iPhone with as few compromises as possible. While not a perfect port, many of the hiccups seem rooted in the limitations of the device to support this style of play. For what it is, though, “Brothers in Arms: Hour of Heroes” is a step in the right direction for big, bold 3D games on the iPhone.

NME recently published an article about the power struggle between games and music, and quickly conversations shifted to the topic of music games versus real ones and the differing opinions about those. Some prominent rockers whined that music games stop kids from getting into real rock bands, while others hold to the idea that such games are ideal for people who plan not to be rock stars, and experience the feeling just for fun.

The Guardian continued forward with this topic, closing the article with a rather incendiary quote from Q Radio presenter David Quantick:

"Games are not rock 'n' roll, they're metal - aggressive, loud, violent and scared of women. You can't dance to a game or have sex to it. games are still for nerds. Rock 'n' roll is about fucking, games are about wanking. Rock music makes you leave the house and meet drugs, games make you stay in and smell of your own piss."

You want to stab this guy in the face, right?

I can't say I blame you -- the disdainful, almost casual tone reeks of holier-than-thou bigotry. On the other fan, Quantick is not exactly the nice type -- he was taken to court after writing what was called a hypocritical, racist article about the singer Morrissey. After Brash Entertainment shuttered its doors last month, a number of the short-lived publisher’s unreleased games were left teetering on the brink of obscurity. Fortunately, the newly emboldened Atari reached out a hand just in time to stop movie tie-in Tale of Depereaux’s fall.
With a big-screen debut only a couple of weeks away, this [...]

You really have to stop and think about that. For every EA there is a Majesco. Companies that work their ass off, but simply don’t have the money to throw around for big business deals. While all companies are feeling the pinch, it’s the smaller guys that are just trying to stay afloat.

There’s nothing you can do to stop your gaming life from changing once you become a parent. Whether you like it or not, your life will become 100% disrupted by that new bundle of joy. That means that nothing is safe…especially gaming. If you plan to stay a gamer and be a good parent all at once, there are some guidelines you’re going to have to deal with. Trust me…one of these things is going to suffer, and I think you would feel really bad if your kid was left wanting while your World of Goo tower kept climbing.

Like Portal before it, Mirror’s Edge is now getting the 2D treatment with a new Flash game now in beta. I suppose it makes a lot of sense actually, since the source material’s main feature was slick controls and acrobatics. Unlike the Flash version of Portal though, this game is officially sanctioned by EA, who are working with Borne Games to develop it. After a quick play through, I’d say this game definitely captures the same feel of the console Mirror’s Edge with it’s simple controls and smooth visuals. Actually, I’d say the game even controls better than the 3D version, since you never have to stop and look around for the next ledge to jump to.

You can give the Flash version of Mirror’s Edge a try here.
