The Week in Demos and Patches: February 17 - 23

One of the biggest patches that hit this week was the new LotRO: Shadows of Angmar Book 12, but normally when you log into the game it is an automatic update. For those you who for some reason did not get the update, the European patch was sent to FileFront this week and you can get it by clicking on the link above. Otherwise there is not much else to report in the patches department other than Stranger, Unreal Tournament 3, Combat Mission Shockforce, and FIFA 08. As far as demos are concerned, we received Fashion Boutique, Spaceforce Captains, Avernum, Light of Dreams and a few others that you can see here.

Saturdays are usually slow around here, and everywhere else for that matter. Saturday afternoons especially. Whether you are recovering after a late Friday night full of binge drinking which you ended by mooning passing cars on the freeway while your friend - sans drivers license - was driving or are just really bored and tired of looking at Lolcats hour after hour, then stop reading this run-on sentence of mine and download a patch for your game or a demo or two.

This week, demos were scarce again. I don’t know if the gaming companies are getting stingy or just really don’t have anything to give us - whatever the case is, it would be nice to see some more trickling in. Patches were in abundance again though, and I have listed the most popular ones below.

Demos that hit this week include:

Dangerous High School Girls: Mac and PC gamers will travel to 1920s Brigiton, USA were this fantastical little town is the home of wily young girls, steadfast boys, and small-minded adults. Here you will gather your gang in the days of Mae West, Clara Bow, and Marlene Dietrich.
Penumbra Black Plague:Paradox Interactive has released a demo which includes the four first levels of the game.
Theatre of War: This demo is built with all of the relevant “Uber” (v1.10.0.81) patch features in play including the new advanced Line of Sight system, radically improved performance across the board as well as enhanced AI behavior.

Patches that hit this week include:

Spaceforce Captains - English edition will add a new feature in the round-based strategy game and provide game improvements! The update will enable the game’s multiplayer mode so that you can start to fight for the stars together with your friends!
Combat Mission Shock Force - For Battlefront and Gamersgate, this all inclusive patch introduces a brand new and advanced high fidelity spotting and line of sight system to the game in addition to a multitude of other gameplay enhancements and changes.
Gothic 3 -Spellbound Software has issued a patch updating Gothic 3 to v1.6. - huge patch release notes are available when you click the link.
Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos - Blizzard has released new patch updating Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos to v1.21b. It includes the same fixes as before (adds 2 new maps, tweaks to older maps and the usual exploit, bug and crash fixes) but also removes the cd-check. Patch also available in the following languages: French, German, Italian, and Korean.

Release Date Overview - February

After the amazing year that was 2007, you would expect to see some sort of a lull in PC game releases. Interestingly this doesn’t look to be the case as 2008 is lining up with a massive list of interesting PC games. Right now the wealth of quality games that were released in 2007 should be plenty to sustain you, but game developers worldwide are creating your next PC gaming fix as we speak! So you better make sure you play through your favorite titles of the past year soon, or you might not be ready for the next great game!

What follows below is a list of many PC games scheduled to hit stores worldwide in the coming year. Some games might not be included due to an unclear release date (Duke Nukem Forever, although Forever seems like it might be an indication of the development time) or no official announcement of the name of a particular project (GarageGames new Tribes-like shooter set for late 2008). Furthermore all release dates are for the European market wherever possible, which means they may not coincide with the release dates for other territories.

More importantly these release dates are likely to be subject to change from the very moment they’re posted. As any gamer will know; developers and publishers don’t always stick to their estimated release dates. Additionally some of these release dates are not official, but rather educated guesses. Fortunately I post a new release date overview every month, so you’re always up to date with the latest release dates. And if your game is lacking, all you need to do is sneak in a mail and I’ll try to fit it in there next month! Now, enjoy!

SpaceForce Captains

The Croatian space strategy is out this week, based on the Elite-styled open-ended space game, SpaceForce: Rogue Universe. I remember SpaceForce being visually pleasing but rather broken on its release in 2007, so I hope the same is only half true of its strategic spin-off. SpaceForce Captains allows you to construct a funky looking space station and employ up to 120 different space captains in your quest for a power. It’s like playing the original game from the perspective of one of the mission-vendors, or something.

Control the fate of the galaxy in the classic turn-based strategy game Captains that invites you to explore and conquer an entirely new space. Ultimately lead your fleets and captains to victory. The game features several distinct forms of game play, including gathering resources, role-playing, and strategy. The basic elements of the game involve developing a space station (space building structures that produce resources, captains or ships) and conquering the space with a captain leading a large fleet and using technology. You develop fleets composed of the squadron commander - Captain and space ship squadrons. When you take a space base, you can buy any of its buyable ships.

* 3 campaign with 24 missions and five space station types, each with six ship types, each with upgraded and un-upgraded forms, and a lot of another type of ships
* experience the finest blend of adventure, strategy, tactics, management and role play ever brewed
* The different kind of resources can be found mostly in asteroid mines and are gathered once a earth day. They are used to build up your captains and their fleets.

The latest game to be featured in the JoWood catalog is Spaceforce Captains, developed by Dreamatrix. This turn based strategy game with a little RPG thrown into the mix, puts the fate of the galaxy in players’ hands as they develop a space station and conquer space with a captain leading a large fleet.
