It seems the Internet may have jumped the gun on PS3 system software version 2.53 -- we told you about it last week, since it appeared that Sony had preemptively (and presumably, inadvertently) revealed the details on the update on their official Web site. Now, we feel completely safe to report on the firmware; we’ve got confirmation over at the PlayStation.Blog from Eric Lempel, Director of PSN Operations, that v2.53 is “coming soon.” Here’s what we’re getting:

Hi everyone, in the next PS3 firmware update (v2.53), coming soon, we’re improving the way the Flash Player works with the internet browser. In addition to being able to access more sites using Flash, you’ll be able to enjoy:

Full-screen mode playability

Live movie (using RTMP format) playability

Now it’s going to be even easier to enjoy web content on your PS3, in full-screen!

Well, it’ll be midnight here on the East Coast in less than five minutes, so we’ll let you know if “soon” translates to “tomorrow.” Here’s hoping I’ll finally be able to full-screen the media players of Hulu and other Flash-based video sites.

[Via PlayStation.Blog -- thanks, Joe!]

[Update: It appears that the update went live shortly before midnight EST; it took me about twelve minutes to download and an additional two to three minutes to install. Hit the jump for notes on my brief sojourn through the world of Flash-based Web video players.]

These imaginary parents (of the future, since the game comes out December 11) were able to just go to the store and purchase the game, whereas anyone hoping to elicit an "Ohhhh, Taiko da!" (It's Taiko!) from us would have to order an import copy of the game and surreptitiously install homebrew software on our Wii.

The point is, basically, that we are intensely jealous of these children and their adorable, Taiko-tolerating cat. The girl just twists the knife by declaring that it's "like an arcade." Oh, right, they have arcades too.

Gallery: Taiko no Tatsujin Wii
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/taiko-no-tatsujin-wii/1123599/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/taiko-no-tatsujin-wii/1123598/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/taiko-no-tatsujin-wii/1123597/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/taiko-no-tatsujin-wii/1123596/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/taiko-no-tatsujin-wii/1123595/">

Watch children enjoy Taiko no Tatsujin Wii originally appeared on Nintendo Wii Fanboy on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 12:50:00 EST.

I read about Jason Rohrer’s game Passage in the latest issue of Esquire and headed over to his site to check it out. The premise is like lots of other arcade games: move around the map and collect as much treasure as you can in five minutes. However, Passage is actually a metaphor for life that’s guaranteed to have you at least a little choked up (if not outright crying) when you finish it. I won’t ruin the surprise for you if you haven’t played it.

It’s especially interesting to me because while games have certainly touched me emotionally before, at certain moments, Passage just hits you so personally. Precisely because the characters are blocky and pixellated, they’re easy to view as representative stand-ins for you and your loved one instead of some external “other” out there in game land.

If games as art is a topic you’ve ever been interested in, you definitely want to go check this out. It’s a small download and doesn’t make you install anything. Just don’t try to play it in a public place, because you might be surprised at how moving it is.

Don't go burning your pre-order slips for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV in effigy just yet, dear readers -- yes, according to an unnamed Rockstar staffer, the title will implement the oft-decried SecuROM to prevent piracy, however, its imposed limitations aren't too severe. Speaking to IGN, the Rockstar rep explained that the GTA IV disc will need to be in the drive in order to play the game, and the title must be registered online upon installation. However, we won't be seeing a repeat of the drama that recently plagued Spore -- there's no limit to the amount of times the game can be installed.

Obviously, these rules are different for those who acquire the game via digital distribution, as retail services such as Steam have their own install limits and anti-piracy measures. We suggest checking out the aforementioned IGN interview if you're currently suffering from a DRM-related panic attack.

[Via Big Download]
PC version of GTA IV to include SecuROM, no install limit originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 29 Nov 2008 18:30:00 EST. It seems like putting together lists of NXE game install sizes is all the rage these days. Now NeoGAF has joined the fun, compiling one of its own. This list includes a few games not featured on the Binge Gamer list we mentioned earlier this month. The list seems fairly exhaustive and we're sure that GAF users will be making it as comprehensive as possible. Many of the games listed also have comments as to how the game performs once installed to the hard drive.
