In the U.S., the day after Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday.” It’s one of the busiest shopping days of the year because most people have the day off from work and many retailers offer doorbuster deals.

The above photo shows a father and his two daughters playing the Wii at a Nintendo kiosk set up at the Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton, California. I found the picture when I searched the Getty Images database, a supplier of stock photos. This one, and the photo below the jump, were the only video game-related pictures I found taken during Black Friday when I searched for “Wii.” Various combos of Xbox 360 and PS3 didn’t turn up any Black Friday pics.

Perhaps this is because the Wii was the most sought-after console during the holiday shopping weekend. eBay reported that it sold 3,171 Wiis and 1,059 copies of “Wii Fit” on its site. (Or maybe there weren’t enough Xbox 360 bundles to go around — there was one video of a gaggle of shoppers accosting a stack of them at a Wal-mart.)

Did you try your luck for a cheap console at the store or online over the weekend? If so, did you run into any problems or was it smooth shopping?

The ones that own a NES that still functions can probably make a hefty profit if they sell it 30 years from now (or 150 years if we’re able to stay alive for that long in the future). However, not many could have guessed that you could make a profit from selling your Nintendo Wii on eBay on a Black Friday. The shopping day following Thanksgiving in the US, 3,171 Wiis were sold in 24 hours. The average price was $349 — $100 above the recommended retail price.

The situation sounds quite strange to me. Nintendo doesn’t get five stars for their range of consoles compared to the demand, but the situation isn’t all that bad compared to a year ago. From eBay, you’re possibly getting a used console and the cash/product exchange is rather slow. All that turkey and jelly must really have got people’s cravings going for sitting down on the couch and playing de Blob.

By the way, the Wii and Wii Fit are the most searched for products across eBay in all categories. That basically means that Nintendo is losing a lot of money because they can’t keep up with what the consumers want.

Even though the Wii reigned supreme on eBay, other retailer sites saw crazy demand for Nintendo's fitness package, Wii Fit. For major retail site Amazon.com, the Wii and Wii Fit were the top-selling video game items throughout the day on Friday. On eBay-owned Shopping.com, the top searches were for Wii Fit and the Nintendo Wii. And during a season that is expected to generate $29 billion, that's a lot of green for Nintendo.

Black Friday 2008 will be remembered as a slight, but pleasant bump in a rocky road for retail this holiday. Fitting, then, that Wii and its equally scarce sidekick, Wii Fit, were the top search items on the day. As it turns out, folks wanted to shop (172 million to be exact!), they just couldn't always buy what they were searching for. With Wii in short supply at retail, eBay merchants continued to turn profits on resales of the console with an average selling price of $349. Overall, online shopping totals grew modestly relative to last year.

Meanwhile, a stack of Xbox 360s caused a brawl at Walmart, and, in a macabre turn of events, an employee was trampled to death by a frenzied mob at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, New York. In California, two men killed each other in a gunfight that erupted at the Palm Desert Toys R Us. All convincing examples of why we prefer to pay it safe from our keyboards: Hellooo Cyber Monday!

eBay issued a press release touting the rush of activity on their online auction site last Friday, in which they celebrated the success of consumer electronics auctions. The press release noted the items for which more people searched eBay than any other, and our favorite console topped the list. The Wii was the most-searched item across all of eBay on Black Friday, and 3,171 of those searchers paid too much for it (an average price of $349) by buying on eBay.

The second most-searched item was probably picked up by most of the same people -- Wii Fit sold 1,059 units at an average $140 price. Congratulations to everyone who "won" one of these items, we guess! Although it's kind of sad to think of all those people either getting rid of their Wiis or grabbing them from stores for the express purpose of eBay markup.

The ESRB has rated a pair of Koei games that aren't Dynasty Warriors for release on the Virtual Console. Both are historical strategic RPGs, though with very different settings. The first, Nobunaga's Ambition (top screens above), tasks players with conquering feudal Japan, while Uncharted Waters: New Horizons is based more on life at sea, and lets you indulge in sailing, trading, and even piracy.

We assume these are the NES versions, though could be wrong -- there were versions of each on the Genesis and SNES. Considering a boxed of copy of either goes for about $20 or $25 on eBay, we could be in for a bargain when these appear.
