Call me crazy, but I'm writing a feature for The Age on the 20 most influential games of all time.

"Influential" clearly does not mean best, although there would be few games in contention that were not brilliant fun.

What's more important is the legacy that these games created, their impact on the industry and the medium, which makes the exercise a little more interesting than the typical "best games ever" lists.

But it's certainly easier said than done. Deciding what makes the cut and what misses out is obviously very controversial, as is ranking one game ahead of another.

My work in progress Top 20 list can be found below. I don't want to give away too much by listing my reasoning for each game, but let me know how I'm going so far and feel free to argue among yourselves.

To make it easy to chastise me, I've also included a list of suggested titles that might also be worthy of attention.

1. Pong
Arcade, 1972

2. Grand Theft Auto III
PlayStation 2, 2001

3. Space Invaders
Arcade, 1978

4. Super Mario 64
Nintendo 64, 1996

5. The Sims
PC, 2000

6. Tomb Raider
PlayStation, Saturn, 1996

7. Doom
PC, 1993

Keith Fung, a 43-year-old retired telecommunications engineer, started his "gaming life" on an Atari 2600 and then with an Apple II clone.

He eventually upgraded to a Commodore Amiga 500 and then switched to PC gaming.

Like many other Australians, he also recently bought a Wii game console because of its "uniquely different wireless controllers" - the Wii Remote and Wii Fit's Balance Board - because they "added a new dimension to my gaming experience".

Click below for Keith's first Your Turn contribution to Screen Play, prompted by my recent interview with Ubisoft's Alain Corre.

Gameplay over eye candy

Screen Play's recent interview with an executive director of Ubisoft flagged the inherent contradiction between aspiring to deliver great games to consumers while implementing a creatively barren corporate cookie cutter approach creating games.

My view is great gameplay in a computer game is akin to a interesting movie plot, and eye candy cannot disguise poor gameplay for long. Pamela Anderson shaking her "assets" does not make the movie "Barb Wire" into a thought-provoking story or a dark dystopian future science fiction classic!

Many games have such thread-bare plots that we cringe when German impresario, Uwe Boll translates them in to his latest "masterpiece" for the silver screen (or direct to video).
It is easier for the corporate machine to deliver eye candy than good gameplay. It's only a matter of working out how many bodies (programmers/artists), dollars (Euros/Yen) and CPU (pixels/shaders) time to render the game environment and characters to deliver eye candy.

This demand for greater graphical realism drives the massive technological arms race between NVIDIA and ATI for more complex and hence more expensive graphics card. Evolving from a simple memory buffer, video graphics cards sport more transistors than a CPU and demanding more complex on card cooling solutions as they strive to render pixels faster than the previous generation of video cards. This forces us poor gamers in a constant PC upgrade cycle to maintain the frame rates of the next new game.

Development by focus group and committee is guaranteed to deliver more of the same bland "me too" games. Ubisoft will continue to crank out thinly disguised future worker conditioning programs to brainwash Gen Z (Imagine: Nursing Home Carer, anyone?)

With game development costing millions and the potential to deliver billions, corporate conservatism is like the movie industry concentrating on cranking out sequels as sure fire money spinners, rather than risk taking a chance to make something original.

A prime example is Electronic Arts assembly lines cranking out annual sports title. EA's current slogan "It's in the game" is a philosophy which steers the development focus in to packing more and more detail in to every game. So that getting the right shade of green for the grass on the fairway at TPC Saw grass is part of the annual "enhancement" program for each successive iteration of Tiger Wood's branded golf games. It is very different from EA's founding CEO Trip Hawkin's original vision that promoted the creatives behind each game (eg Bill Budge Pinball).

Great game play is perennial and not necessarily original. Take the classic Blizzard game Diablo which is about to receive its third iteration within the near future. At its essence, Diablo owes it game play to that classic arcade game Gauntlet, which also has had three iterations in the past. Gauntlets core game play consisted of a group of players cooperatively working to combat wave after wave of different foes across differing maps while collecting "Phat Lewt"drops.

Diablo alumni who left Blizzard went on to develop their own versions of this basic premise (cooperative game play against relentless waves of foes) in the form of the relatively successful Guildwars series and the less than successful Hellgate: London.

As the old saying goes, money talks. So as consumers, we should direct our purchasing power towards games that deliver on gameplay so they will make more of them. Shunning the cookie cutter sequels, will force the corporates to stop making mediocre copycat games which will only lose them money.

- Keith Fung

Relic still don’t seem to have really sold what Dawn Of War 2 is all about in their game footage and associated marketing jabber. Here’s what I wrote after I saw it in Vancouver almost a year ago: “What was great about the original game, such as its vicious melee combat and feeling of solidity, is going to provide cues for the new direction that this game moves in. DoW2 is a game that focuses on the actions of small team of personalised soldiers. Relic keep reiterating: this is a game where you are going to be focusing on the violent destruction of your enemies. It’s about “five or six squads of elite warriors” whose actions are going to define the course of galactic events in the Warhammer universe. It’s closer, and more intimate than the original game, discarding base-building and that anonymous production-line feel of the previous Dawn Of War games.” So think Diablo with squads of heavily armed space marines. Something like that.

A couple of minutes of footage beyond the cut show that. Shame it’s not something really meaty like the assault marines escaping from a collapsing bridge, or the fight with the ork warboss. Eurogamer have a more recent hands-on just here.

According to eagle-eyed Score Hero forum folks, a sneak peak at next week's Rock Band downloadable content briefly appeared on the in-game music store.

And what exactly did they see? Oh, just this pile of rad ...

Soundgarden Singles:
"Jesus Christ Pose"
"Pretty Noose"

Lamb of God single:
"Laid To Rest"

Yngwie Malmsteen Pack 01
"Red Devil'
"Damnation Game"
"Caprici Di Diablo"

The Kilers Pack 01
"Spaceman"
"Mr. Brightside"
"Smile Like You Mean It"

If this is true, it looks like there's a little something here for everyone. Or, from where I'm looking at things, nine God damned songs I'll be spending money on next week. No word on pricing, but it'll likely be in line with earlier DLC (i.e. every dime I've got ... jerks).

[Thanks, power-glove]
