Ready 2 Rumble Revolution punching out Wii in March 2009

Though we don't know much at the moment, CVG is reporting that Atari will release Ready 2 Rumble Revolution on the Wii in March of next year. In case you're among the sad few unfamiliar with the franchise, Ready 2 Rumble was a cartoonish boxing game ... really Facebreaker before Facebreaker was Facebreaker. (Oh, and before you panic, we captured the pic above from one of those older R2Rs.)

The series has typically featured mini-games to train your boxer like pill popping and weight lifting, as well as celebrity cameos like Michael Jackson and Hillary Clinton. They've been replaced in R2RR by David Beckham, Brad Pitt and John Travolta. Go figure.

Rumor: Lego Harry Potter in the works

We don't think we're being too controversial when we say that Harry Potter has never been at the center of a high-quality game. It would make sense then that, according to a CVG report, The Boy Who Lived could be brickitized for a Lego adventure à la Batman and Indiana Jones. Heck, something has to work eventually, right?

No further details were reported by CVG, but we imagine you can probably fill in the blanks yourself. Here's hoping the boy wizard works better in game form when he's two inches tall.

Behold Japan's Resident Evil 5 LE, with console-specific extras

Capcom Japan's online store has put up a pre-sale page for the limited edition of Biohazard 5, a.k.a. Resident Evil 5 to us gaijin. It's a handsome LE treatment for the game, and is interesting in that PS3 and 360 will each receive their own variation with unique bonuses.

Set to go on sale March 3, 2009 at ¥12,800 ($137), both LE sets include a 2GB Tricell USB drive, 32-page art book, and BSAA "Waist Pocket" like the characters in the game wear. On the PS3 side, the game's Blu-ray Disc will include a making-of documentary; the 360 edition will actually come in two flavors: a Deluxe Edition, which includes a Biohazard 5 Selection Track soundtrack CD, and the Limited Edition which ... doesn't. The 360 "DE" will apparently be even more limited than the LE.

Capcom hasn't revealed plans for a US limited edition for either version of RE5, but, given the increase in volume of premium bundles in the last two years alone, we'd be surprised if its marketing folk don't come up with something special for Western gamers.

Warner says no comment on Lego Harry Potter

Is Harry Potter getting Lego-fied? The rumors are becoming more persistent on the web (it's been going on for a few years now, actually), but we're still not hearing anything confirmatory on the matter.

To make things even more suspenseful, Warner themselves have resorted to the ever-safe fencesitting answer in the world, when asked by Videogaming 247: "No Comment". Meanwhile, CVG is leaning towards a confirmation noting that there's a new Harry Potter movie coming out soon, and that Warner did publish Lego Batman too, anyway, so it can't be that far out to have a Lego Harry Potter, yes?

But Warner's still keeping mum on this, although that "No Comment" comment, we think it's more likely a yes, don't you?

Rumor word coming from CVG is that a new LEGO: Harry Potter game is in development for a possible release next year as Traveller's Tales continues to develop every known franchise into a blocky LEGO game. Yes, we're looking at you Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman. The LEGO: Harry Potter game is also rumored to be published by Warner Bros. Interactive who wore the publisher hat for the recently released LEGO: Batman game.

Any guess to how long before we see LEGO: Lord of the Rings make it to retail? A brickified Gollum would be sweet.

Rumor: Lego Harry Potter on the Horizon?

Nothing grows more during a slow news day that a wild, baseless rumor, but they’re still just so entertaining to hear about. CVG is now speculating that the next licensed property to be given the “Lego video game” treatment will be the Harry Potter series. They stumbled along this little tidbit of information, and so they’re now trying to confirm it with Warner Bros.

Even though EA owns the rights to make PC and console game’s tied into the movies, it’s hard to say if that agreement encompasses Lego versions as well. At any rate, Traveller’s Tales must certainly be looking for a new property to tap after the success of their Lego Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman outings. Shouldn’t be too hard: turn everything in Hogwarts into bricks, add a few co-op puzzles, throw in a dash of wordless, goofy cut-scenes, and you’re done. These Lego games practically make themselves.

Olympic medalist Michael Phelps to get his own game, may involve swimming

OK, we get it -- throw United States Olympic swimmer into the water and he goes fast. Having broken records left and right at this year's Beijing Olympics, taking home eight gold medals, it's next to impossible to see him anywhere with a shirt on.

Now, according to a profile of the swimmer on 60 Minutes, he'll be getting his very own videogame. No details were given, including who would be publishing the title, but let's just take a guess that assume that the game will be swimming-related.

But has there ever been a good swimming game, really? The answer is "no," as they all inevitably involve mashing a single button repeatedly. But with the advent of Wii motion controls, one can imagine this can be translated to making "swimming motions" with your arms and hands. Can't wait.

True story: when I was working as a manager at a GameStop in Baltimore, MD (secret's out!), I took Phelps' reserve for Madden NFL 2005 when he was just a local swimming superstar. I framed the receipt he signed. And by "framed" I mean I shoved it into a white envelope and sent it off to accounting along with the rest of the receipts, of course.
