Things I’ve learned this month:

*People who bought or rented “Wii Music,” on average, played it several hours less since launch those who have played Wii versions of “Call of Duty,” “Guitar Hero,” and “Animal Crossing” — three games that came out weeks after Nintendo’s musical game. Problem?

*In November 2008, the most fervently played game on the Wii among a population of 1.4 million possible Wii owners was… “Madden All-Play 09,” logging almost three hours of play time per person. That crushes average playing time stats in the same month for “Smash Brothers,” “Rock Band” and “Mario Kart.”

*”World of Goo” racked up at least 9,300 non-pirated copies sold to those 1.4 million Wii owners in November. Take that, pirates!

These are just some of the discoveries in our fourth number-filled breakdown of Wii software usage stats. We’re dong this monthly and we can pull numbers for (almost) any Wii game that’s been out for at least a month. Who needs NPDs? And who needs exit poll numbers?

See below to learn a LOT about the performance of 33 Wii games, including new entries for the mighty “Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess,” the surprising “My Pokemon Ranch” and the statistically scary “Wario Land: Shake It.”

Remember! I’m not tracking sales. I’m tracking how much time the people who play and rent these games actually play them. See it all for yourself:

WII SOFTWARE USAGE AS OF DECEMBER 1, 2008

The following statistics are pulled from the Wii’s Nintendo Channel, which allows users to persistently share their play history for any disc or downloadable games played on the Wii. These numbers do not reflect overall usage of these games on the Wii but instead reflect usage of the more than 1.4 million Americans who are sharing info with the channel (up from 1.3 million last month). We think that’s a pretty healthy sample size!

Games are ranked in order of average play time. The game we’re tracking that has been played the longest by its average user is at the top of this list.

If there are more games you want us to track, let us know!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Released March 2008)

Average time played per player:
As of 11/2: 26.40
As of 10/5: 25.54
As of 9/1: 24.65

Analysis: Nintendo’s early 2008 love letter to its hardcore fans (i.e. the people who decided to hate the company this fall) remains the most feverishly played game among the 1.4 million Nintendo Channel users and therefore, it’s a safe bet, among all Wii owners in America. And wouldn’t you know that it’s expanding its lead in average time spent per-player over ‘Guitar Hero III”! I don’t think “GHIII” can catch it, especially not if Wii owners switch over to “Guitar Hero World Tour.”

Analysis: Activision’s music game is going strong and still has a commanding lead over “Rock Band” Wii. The fact that it’s been on the market for more than half a year longer may have something to do with that. Oh, and this game still boasts an amazing number of sessions per player.
Analysis: With the addition of “Zelda” to the list, “Wii Sports” falls a notch. Let’s see if all the new Wii owners in November and December drag these stats down. More and more people will be logging just a few new sessions each in Nintendo’s pack-in game.
Analysis: Take a look at that first bolded number. The average play time on “Rock Band” shot up almost two hours during the month of November. That’s a lot of “Rock Band” playing. People get this game and play it a ton.

The numbers I’m tracking here tell us how much each person who has a copy of a game likes their game enough to keep playing it. Ah, but the 1.4 million users of the Nintendo Channel who contributed the stats I’m drawing from logged just 54,483 hours on the game in November. That accounts for about 3,800 copies of the game being played by these 1.4 million. Doesn’t seem like this game’s going to be a blockbuster on Wii, even if you account for Nintendo Channel users representing a little under a 10th of American Wii owners.

Analysis: Not bad. I didn’t think “Star Wars” had another hour worth of game to be played by the average game. Maybe it’s taking them longer to clear it on the Wii than it took me to beat on the Xbox 360? Or are people going back for a second adventure?

Analysis: This is scary for Nintendo. We know the game didn’t sell all that well in Japan or America. But people at Nintendo have maintained that those who got their hands on the game would come to understand it and embrace it. That’s not happening. Look what happens when people get this game for rental or purchase. On average they play it four times, for about seven and a half hours. That’s not much of a display of passion, not compared to how people played “Call of Duty: World At War,” “Guitar Hero: World Tour” and “Animal Crossing: City Folk,” all of which were released after “Wii Music.”

CONCLUSION

What new games are people loving on the Wii this season once they get them in their home? Sequels to “Guitar Hero,” “Madden” and “Animal Crossing,” believe it or not. That’s what is resonating and staying in people’s drives. New original content released post-”Wii Fit” isn’t charting well at all.

Black Friday, whether you view it as America's most chaotic consumer spending spree or simply as an excuse to shove everyone between you and a $3 toaster, is a critical retail event for console manufacturers. According to Microsoft, the Xbox 360 enjoyed record sales during the frantic shopping period, amounting to an increase of 25% over last year. The company can't resist claiming victory in a battle that doesn't involve the Wii -- the Xbox 360 is said to have outsold the PlayStation 3 by a factor of three.

Microsoft also expressed satisfaction with software sales, with Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Lips (yes, the karaoke game) leading the way. We'll have to wait until November's NPD results are out until we can see just how well each of those titles fared.
Microsoft: Black Friday Xbox 360 sales trump PS3 3-to-1 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 09:15:00 EST. It came out over a year later ... and didn't turn out to be worth waiting, or paying 1,000 Wii Points for (much less the 1,500 Bplus charged in Europe).

Bplus apparently wasn't discouraged by the poor critical reception. They're back with another WiiWare game with a similarly inscrutable title. Niki -- Rock 'n' Ball is a very retro-style single-screen platformer in which the character controls a rolling ball that can transform into a rock. Each level contains ZeLeLi pearls that the player must pick up, while defeating enemies, in order to open the exit.

Bplus has yet to announce a price for Niki. Hopefully they've learned from the Plättchen experience.

[Via WiiWare World]
Plattchen developer announces another weirdly-named WiiWare game originally appeared on Nintendo Wii Fanboy on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 17:30:00 EST. So it has come to this. Sonic and Knuckles, both kitted out in body armor (including some truly laughable headwear on Knuckles), and having it out with swords. Just kill us now.

The latest fifteen screens of Sonic and the Black Knight suggest that Sega has learned nothing from the critical response to Sonic Unleashed. Many reviews heavily criticized the werehog melee sections, but praised the running bits. So why are Sonic and Knuckles now exchanging scimitar swipes?! Sega's fascination with turning Sonic games into some kind of cartoony God of War baffles us.

Mind you, one possible explanation for this trend cropped up in the latest IGN 'Three Red Lights' podcast, where Sonic Unleashed developer David Clayman argued that a Sonic game featuring only running stages would last around three hours, such is the hedgehog's speed (full transcript here). In which case, may we politely suggest a WiiWare Sonic game, David?

Gallery: Sonic and the Black Knight
<a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/sonic-and-the-black-knight/1194902/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/sonic-and-the-black-knight/1194901/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/sonic-and-the-black-knight/1194900/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/sonic-and-the-black-knight/1194899/"><a href="http://"www.nintendowiifanboy.com"/photos/sonic-and-the-black-knight/1194898/">

[Screens via press release; Indoor Heroes link via Go Nintendo]
Sonic and the Ludicrous Body Armor originally appeared on Nintendo Wii Fanboy on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 16:34:00 EST.
If you're not a PC gamer, then you'll probably have missed out on The Witcher, a Polish RPG powered by BioWare's Aurora engine and famous mostly for having prostitutes in it. The critical reception was more or less favorable, although a couple of reviews were pretty brutal.

Good or bad, the world at large will soon be able to sample the fruit of CD Projekt's labor when it is released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 as The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. Hooray for all!

I must admit I am curious about this game, but up until recently lacked a computer capable of running the thing. I do believe I shall be checking this saucy little number out when it hits the consoles, if only because I still remember the game's awful example of a pick up line: "I know a peach when I see one."

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Attorney General Bill McCollum today urged parents and other consumers to check the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings before purchasing computer or video games as gifts. According to industry statistics, more than 50 percent of computer and video games are sold during the holiday shopping season, making it critical that shoppers ensure the games they give to young people are age- and content-appropriate.

“Though the holiday season is one of the busiest times of year, it is also perhaps the most important time of the year for consumers to make sure they know what they’re buying for their loved ones,” said Attorney General McCollum. “The ESRB rating system provides parents and others with age and content information which can be informative tools when purchasing games for family and friends.”

I bit the bullet and subscribed to a gaming magazine yesterday, something I have not done since the glory days of CGW and PC Gamer when they had just started packing in demo disc with each issue... a 3 1/2 inch floppy disc, that is.

But this post is not to prove just how old I am. No, I wanted to talk about my new, year-long subscription to Edge magazine, a publication that I have casually picked up at the news stands these past several months and one that I have thoroughly fallen in love with.

If you needed any proof of the vitality of print media in games journalism, you needn't look much further than Edge. Standing tall with authority on the store shelves, the magazine dwarfs all other gaming zines in both size, writing quality, scope of coverage and design aesthetics. Holding a weighty issue in hand, you'd wonder if you've picked up the video game industry's answer to Wallpaper. Edge publishes very large issues packed with articles, printed on very high quality stock. The sheer glossiness of it is almost off-putting were it not for the many nuggets of gaming goodness hidden within.

The articles themselves cover the usual gamut of interviews, developer spotlights, previews, reviews and news bites. They also have regular features dedicated to careers in the games industry, typically spearheaded by a lengthy examination of a current or burgeoning games development hotspot (eg. Singapore) as well as pages upon pages of local developer spotlights. This focus on the games workforce is a big indication of Edge's more holistic approach to the industry and makes the reader feel like an insider rather than an outside consumer constantly looking in. To wit, the overriding raison d'etre of Edge seems to stem from a real passion for the industry as opposed to a desire to push products and justify advertising dollars.

One needs only to flip to any Edge reviews section and find a palpable sense of restraint compared to the rest of the magazine. A few high profile reviews may dominate some full pages but the majority of reviews are packed together in tight columns. They are written with a amazing economy of words yet never wanting in insight. Unlike other video publications which showcase their review scores with splashy fonts and graphics, the Edge staff almost seems embarrassed to score games, relegating the numbers (they use a 10-point scale) at the conclusion of each review with zero fanfare.

Above all else, it is the style of the writing that has won my heart and made me a believer in magazines once again. The text can be impenetrable at times and annoy those who are not used to creative sentence structure. But let it be said that they don't treat their audience like idiots. They have the most unusual previews in that they actually include pointed, sometimes very critical observations of games still in development. Gushing first-looks are rare and if done, you still feel like their enthusiasm is well justified. It's not a style that would sit well with someone like Denis Dyack, but we the readers benefit immensely. We get our lovely screenshots, some hard facts and juicy promises, but the sobering reservations help us manage our expectations accordingly.

If you have any love for the printed word and video games, you owe it to yourself to sample an issue off the news stand. As a high-quality import, Edge doesn't come cheap ($15 Cdn) and they are usually only found in specialty magazine stores and book stores. To save some money, you can subscribe and save an impressive 30% off the cover price.
