Black Friday and the following Saturday showed consumer electronics and casual apparel, particularly shoes, continue to be popular items for gifts this holiday season, according to information from NearbyNow, Inc., regarding shopping trends in over 500 cities across the US. Retailers and specialty stores like EB Games, Ritz Camera, Gamestop, The Finish Line, The Walking Company, and American Eagle Outfitters led the pack in product requests over a two-day period beginning on Black Friday.

NearbyNow is currently monitoring what items are in the highest demand across hundreds of cities in the US, based on the use of its popular local shopping service where consumers can search for items at stores near them and put them on hold for pick up. The Wii Fit™ Bundle, and all Wii™ Accessories, including the Wii Super Smash Brothers Bundle, are all in very high demand. These items continue to be particularly popular in the Midwest and Northwest while the Southwest favors Killzone for PlayStation 2 and Nike’s Shox running shoes for both men and women.

[ I know I said I'd blather more about randomness, and then I didn't post for a month... I have 11 drafts on aspects of randomness, but none of them are good enough to subject you to yet. I've enjoyed the discussions people have had in the previous post though, good points, well presented! ]

I wanted to give my condolences to the folks who are losing their job at NCSoft due to Tabula Rasa shutting down. Tough luck, guys, and I hope you bounce back. On the other hand, I can’t say I liked the game.

Actually I have two strong memories of Tabula Rasa from before it shipped. One was from an E3 many years ago, when Tabula Rasa was the darling of the show. Groups of four sat down together to play through a prescripted scenario. I played a futuristic warrior that blasted the enemies with my electric guitar, causing musical notes to fly at him and knock him down. As a group, we managed to take out a boss monster and clear a dungeon. It was fun. The cumulative thinking was, “Huh. Really odd setting, but it has fun gameplay.”

There was troubling talk, however. The presenter told us that they were going to add aspects of a Great War, and everybody was going to be fighting everybody else and it was going to be great. That didn’t seem like a very compelling addition to me. It looked like a fun future-space-opera MMORPG with nice dungeons and interesting set pieces. Having a big PK war didn’t sound like the secret sauce this game needed, but whatever. Still reasonably optimistic.

My other strong memory about Tabula Rasa came from the Last Real E3 Ever, a couple years ago. Tabula Rasa was not the same as before. Now it was all about the big war, I guess. Gone were the silly space opera aspects, and now it was a game where you run around as a marine shooting people but not aiming. I watched people play it for a while, feigning enjoyment before wandering away. The presenter asked me if I’d like to play it, and if so I’d get a free T-shirt. I turned him down. In other words, Tabula Rasa didn’t look fun enough to play it for free, even if they paid me with a free T-shirt. I played a lot of other, much more terrible games at that E3. But this was all about market. I didn’t find the “be a space marine!” hook to be at all interesting. And that combined with the “you don’t have to aim!” hook meant nobody was interested. The wacky vibe from the earlier incarnation of the game had actually been a decent hook — something new and fresh enough to at least get people to play it for a few minutes. But that was gone.

I think the moral is threefold:

Don’t re-make your game from scratch. There’s no surer way to fiscal failure than having to completely change the target audience of your game after it’s already through pre-production.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. They redesigned Tabula Rasa so many times that it became a sterile and bland thing.

Have a target audience in mind AT ALL TIMES, and for God’s sake, spend a few grand testing to see if your target audience actually wants this thing you’re offering. They have companies to do this, they’re called polling consultants. Use them. They are not prohibitively expensive for an MMO company. $10k can get you a lot of really useful data about whether your $20m game is going to work or not.

Things I’ve learned this month:

*People who bought or rented “Wii Music,” on average, played it several hours less since launch those who have played Wii versions of “Call of Duty,” “Guitar Hero,” and “Animal Crossing” — three games that came out weeks after Nintendo’s musical game. Problem?

*In November 2008, the most fervently played game on the Wii among a population of 1.4 million possible Wii owners was… “Madden All-Play 09,” logging almost three hours of play time per person. That crushes average playing time stats in the same month for “Smash Brothers,” “Rock Band” and “Mario Kart.”

*”World of Goo” racked up at least 9,300 non-pirated copies sold to those 1.4 million Wii owners in November. Take that, pirates!

These are just some of the discoveries in our fourth number-filled breakdown of Wii software usage stats. We’re dong this monthly and we can pull numbers for (almost) any Wii game that’s been out for at least a month. Who needs NPDs? And who needs exit poll numbers?

See below to learn a LOT about the performance of 33 Wii games, including new entries for the mighty “Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess,” the surprising “My Pokemon Ranch” and the statistically scary “Wario Land: Shake It.”

Remember! I’m not tracking sales. I’m tracking how much time the people who play and rent these games actually play them. See it all for yourself:

WII SOFTWARE USAGE AS OF DECEMBER 1, 2008

The following statistics are pulled from the Wii’s Nintendo Channel, which allows users to persistently share their play history for any disc or downloadable games played on the Wii. These numbers do not reflect overall usage of these games on the Wii but instead reflect usage of the more than 1.4 million Americans who are sharing info with the channel (up from 1.3 million last month). We think that’s a pretty healthy sample size!

Games are ranked in order of average play time. The game we’re tracking that has been played the longest by its average user is at the top of this list.

If there are more games you want us to track, let us know!

As of 11/2: 26.40
As of 9/1: 24.65

Analysis: Nintendo’s early 2008 love letter to its hardcore fans (i.e. the people who decided to hate the company this fall) remains the most feverishly played game among the 1.4 million Nintendo Channel users and therefore, it’s a safe bet, among all Wii owners in America. And wouldn’t you know that it’s expanding its lead in average time spent per-player over ‘Guitar Hero III”! I don’t think “GHIII” can catch it, especially not if Wii owners switch over to “Guitar Hero World Tour.”

Analysis: Activision’s music game is going strong and still has a commanding lead over “Rock Band” Wii. The fact that it’s been on the market for more than half a year longer may have something to do with that. Oh, and this game still boasts an amazing number of sessions per player.
Analysis: Take a look at that first bolded number. The average play time on “Rock Band” shot up almost two hours during the month of November. That’s a lot of “Rock Band” playing. People get this game and play it a ton.

The numbers I’m tracking here tell us how much each person who has a copy of a game likes their game enough to keep playing it. If “All-Play” can eventually rank higher than “NFL 08,” then we can at least credit EA’s designers with a success.

Ah, but the 1.4 million users of the Nintendo Channel who contributed the stats I’m drawing from logged just 54,483 hours on the game in November. That accounts for about 3,800 copies of the game being played by these 1.4 million. Doesn’t seem like this game’s going to be a blockbuster on Wii, even if you account for Nintendo Channel users representing a little under a 10th of American Wii owners.

Look what happens when people get this game for rental or purchase. On average they play it four times, for about seven and a half hours. That’s not much of a display of passion, not compared to how people played “Call of Duty: World At War,” “Guitar Hero: World Tour” and “Animal Crossing: City Folk,” all of which were released after “Wii Music.”

Analysis: This game’s the WiiWare king. But, below, I see some contenders to the throne.

Take that for what it’s worth.

CONCLUSION

What new games are people loving on the Wii this season once they get them in their home? Sequels to “Guitar Hero,” “Madden” and “Animal Crossing,” believe it or not. That’s what is resonating and staying in people’s drives. New original content released post-”Wii Fit” isn’t charting well at all.

(Credit to comic book number-cruncher Marc-Oliver Frisch for unknowingly inspiring some of the elements of this series)

Check back in early January for more Wii number crunching. And let me know what you think. Feedback is always welcome!

An unidentified source at an unnamed company recently told Spanish PlayStation blog PSN! that SackBoy will become the fourth downloadable character for Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds. The content is supposed to drop on December 11, but the mysterious source was scant on the pricing details.

While this is definitely an unsubstantiated rumor, it’s important to note that Out of Bounds is a mascot-friendly game. Way back in August, Kratos from God of War fame because a downloadable character. Unfortunately, he didn’t use one of his swords as a club. We’re guessing that Sackboy won’t be using his zipper as one either.

It’s of note to mention that this is the same website that brought us the images of the Street Fighter costumes that are allegedly being added to LittleBigPlanet as costume DLC. That has yet to be confirmed as well, but seems almost too legitimate to consider otherwise.

[Thanks, Macrike!]

This is what the conservative Christian investment firm, The Timothy Plan, warns for parents planning to get games for their kids.
