“Just because Sony and Microsoft are having problems doesn’t mean the Wii wouldn’t have been a success. I’d say Nintendo hit a triple in opening inning and never stopped scoring. It’s a fun machine that uses a new perspective to give most gamers a new and welcome experience. Sure, it’s technically graphically inferior, but it delivers fun, fun, fun… when you don’t buy shovelware.

“Just like last generation, there was plenty of crap to be found on the dominant system [PlayStation 2], but I don’t base judgment on crap I don’t buy. Nintendo had the right strategy all along by keeping things simple and sweet. I do love my Xbox 360, just not the same. It’s kinda like the grandparents you don’t visit as much.”

Codemasters was kind enough to send us some fancy "pre-alpha" screenshots of their upcoming multi-terrain racer, Fuel.

Yup, another one-word-titled racing game, Fuel is said to feature the largest "level" every created in a racing game of its type. Codies is promising over 5,000 square miles of open-ended environments, along with full day/night cycles and a weather system that will bring rain, tornadoes, sandstorms, and ... blizzards?

As long as we don't get the game confused with the 13 other off-road racing games with one word as its title, our attention is in the hands of Codemasters -- the game does sound good on paper. The Asobo Studios developed Fuel is set to hit the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2009.

So, true story: I was just in Hot Topic today thinking "Man, Rock Band needs an All That Remains DLC pack!" OK, fine -- that's not what I was thinking at all. I was actually thinking "Man, I feel way too old to be in here," right after I bought my wife a sweet "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" t-shirt for 50% off.

In any case, "metalcore" band All That Remains will be getting a three song pack for Rock Band next week that includes:

• "This Calling"
• "Chiron"
• "Two Weeks"

Individual tracks will cost $1 (or 80 MS Points), and the whole package can be picked up for $3 (or 240 MS Points). All tracks are masters because, well, it's easier to find a Black Sabbath cover band than one that performs songs by All That Remains.

As usual, the DLC will be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace next Tuesday, and the PlayStation Network the following Thursday.

I’m pretty confident that any gamer with at least a passing interest in the Star Wars universe knows that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is coming to the PLAYSTATION 3, PS2, and PSP this month (September 16th, to be exact).

That’s why SCEA is teaming up with LucasArts and Best Buy to mark the midnight release of the game in San Francisco on the night of September 15th - and everyone’s invited to the launch party. Beginning at 7pm, the 1717 Harrison St. Best Buy location (that’s my hood!) will feature appearances by Sam Witwer (Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice - and main character of the game), as well as a number of other cast members. From the game development side, Executive Producer Haden Blackman and others from LucasArts will be on hand. Attendees will be able to play the full version of the game in advance, and take photos with Star Wars characters.

“But I don’t live in San Francisco!”, you may be typing furiously into the comments section. Well, we thought ahead about how to include the rest of the country. Here’s the plan:

Later today, I’m going to visit with Haden Blackman at LucasArts for an interview. What do you want to know about the game (or anything, for that matter)? I’ll ask him for you.

The interview will show up on the Blog this coming Monday - and at that time, Mr. Blackman will ask a Star Wars-related trivia question. The first respondents with the correct answer will win special Star Wars/The Force Unleashed collectables. We’ll have all the details on how to win (and what you’ll be playing for) this Monday.

The game I voted for was “Polarity.”

“Polarity” is a gravity-defying platformer that allows the player to tap the X button (they were letting people play with an Xbox 360 controller) to alter their polarity between red and blue. You must manipulate your personal polarity to navigate through environment.

I’ve never played anything quite like it. I’ll try to explain it:

There were five stages available for the PAX demo. As the stages became increasingly more complicated, it was taking longer and longer for me to complete them. Because I didn’t want to hold up the line, I limited myself to the first four stages, but it gave me the grand tour of what the unnamed team behind “Polarity” is trying to accomplish.

“Polarity” starts out simply enough. If your polarity is set to red and you pass by a blue block, you’ll stick to it. This allows you to climb up walls. Because you can quickly switch between polarities, the effects vary. It creates the opposite effect with the blue blocks. Instead of being sucked towards them, they push you away. This comes in handy when faced with a deadly pit full of blue; change to red and you hover over.

It’s when the game stops teaching you its mechanics and begins turning its conventions on its head that “Polarity” becomes really interesting.

You’re taught to use your powers to drag colored balls through the environment, but one puzzle has you shifting the polarity around to push the balls in the opposite direction. You don’t want them to come with you; you want them as far away as possible. It’s these kinds of brain teasers that had me setting down the controller and looking at the screen during PAX.

Right now, “Polarity” is just a demo. There aren’t any plans for a release on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, WiiWare or anywhere else. But you can download the demo for free from the official “Polarity” website.

I highly recommend you do.
