One of the most important things about a portable device is that you can actually play it without being near an electrical outlet. For instance, my DS runs for an impressively long time without dying while my ancient laptop on the other hand pretty much commits suicide every time I unplug it from a wall. This makes my laptop not that great of a portable device and my DS a really good one. The PSP has been resting somewhere between the two with a battery life that is acceptable but nowhere near great. Unfortunately that acceptable running time is getting even shorter with the PSP 3000.

In a recent video, which is basically an ad for the PSP, Sony Computer Entertainment America product marketing manager John Koller spoke about the battery life, saying, “Battery life will decrease by a small amount, it’s about 20 minutes maybe 30 minutes and that’s because there’s a larger power draw with the brighter screen.” 30 minutes less is a small amount? That’s a pretty big chunk of gaming if you ask me. Don’t worry though, Sony will be keeping the battery extending pack they sell compatible. They’re just that thoughtful.

This week’s Japanese hardware sales figures have been released, and despite a general drop in sales for pretty much all consoles, it’s good to see the DS back on top, outselling the PSP by 9,000 units (56,000 to 47,000). Wii was once again in third, sinking slightly to 35,000 consoles sold, with PS3 and Xbox 360 way back on 9,000 units and 3,500 units respectively.

It’s traditionally a slow time for hardware sales, but things should pick up in the coming months - Wii Music will be a big seller in October, while the DS will get a huge boost from Pokemon Platinum in two weeks’ time.

It’s all in this week’s PlayStation Store update along with more than a handful of videos, trailers and wallpapers for your PlayStation 3, plus the week’s installment of Rock Band tracks and demos of both NHL 09 and Soulcalibur IV. PSP owners, on the other hand, are being treated to a Cake Mania theme and a few wallpapers. Truly captivating content.

This week’s headliner is The Last Guy, the just recently announced game which uses aerial photos of well known locales to depict a city overrun by zombies. You’re tasked with rounding up the survivors and delivering them to a safe zone so they can be airlifted to what I imagine is a further perilous situation, but hey — it’s not your problem at that point. A demo was released last week and allowed you to try out part of the Asakusa, Tokyo level. The full version will run you $10 and can be purchased from inside the demo version should you want to save some time.

Also new to the Store this week is the Fallen Star expansion pack for Warhawk. For $8 (or $16 if you opt for the Warhawk Booster Combo which includes all three Warhawk expansions) you get an entirely new level and the Mk.1 Rocket Pack, which is that fancy-looking jetpack you see above. Given that the jetpack is an entirely new dynamic, the expansion includes new layouts for the existing game maps. And don’t forget about the free update that was released on Wednesday which added Trophy support along with a long list of other features and fixes, including tutorials that make the game much easier to jump into for newcomers.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (Pre-Order at GAME: 360, PS3, PC, PS2)

Mercenaries 2 is a game about blowing crap up, dropping nukes, driving monster trucks and jacking helicopters. I don’t need to play a game about my everyday life, but if you losers wanna play the life of a cutthroat Merc, hunting for pesky Venezuelans in 2010, then go right ahead.
You gain control of a Mercenary camp site where you can hire private militia types to drop airstrikes, fix vehicles and even extract you from an explosive situation. Best of all? Full drop-in, drop-out Co-op.

FaceBreaker (Pre-Order at GAME: 360, PS3)

Facebreaker mixes NES Punch-Out and Dreamcast Ready 2 Rumble in a frenetic, cartoon boxing ring. You’ve got all the stereotypes; a Russian named Molotov, a World of Warcraft Guild Leader come professional boxer and a character with a mysterious past.
You can also fight a number of celebrities such as Peter “I jumped ship” Moore, Kim “I’ve got giant jugs” Kardashian, Spencer “I don’t think we get MTV’s The Hills in England” Pratt and Heidi “I know how to say Monday in German, it’s” Montag.

Spore (Pre-Order at GAME: PC, DS)

Spore is kind of like Pac-Man but when you do well you get legs and play a bit of Diablo, but when you mate with other creatures it turns into Populous, and when you fight with other tribes its like Civilization, but when you go into space it’s kind of like SimEarth, Destroy All Humans!, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Master of Orion. Considering that’s mostly a list of things I don’t like, or have never heard of, I guess I’m gonna like Spore.

STALKER Clear Sky (Pre-Order at GAME: PC)

STALKER, an outstandingly atmospheric 2007 FPS that dealt with an alternative series of events post the Chernobyl explosion, receives a prequel in the form of STALKER: Clear Sky. The game adds factions, new areas, a hand-held radiation detector and day and night routines for the A.I. It does lose the confined, claustrophobic and oh my god I’ve crapped by pants because a mutant is pulling me up to the surface with his tongue, caves though – not necessarily a bad thing.

Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise (Pre-Order at GAME: 360)

In Viva Pinata’s twenty-sixth century setting, the player assumes the role of the Chewnicorn, a cybernetically enhanced “SUGARTAN” super-solider. The player is accompanied by Swanana, an artificially flavoured banana swan who occupies the Chewnicorn’s neural garden. Players battle various ruffians on foot and in vehicles as they attempt to uncover the secrets of the eponymous MarshMalo, a spongy, sugary structure.

The Force Unleashed (Pre-Order at GAME: 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, PS2)

Ever wonder what it would be like to take a TIE-Fighter out of the sky, crush it into a storm trooper, take his crushed corpse, throw that into a wookie, pick him up, jam a lightsaber through his torso, force push some crates out of a window to make a space vacuum that sucks up a load of droids, Tardises and C3POs? Well wait no further, because my fan fiction is finished! It even has a section where Yaddle and Yoda make passionate love on a Star Destroyer! I don’t know what any of these words mean!

What did you mean you never asked that? You don’t want to find out that Psycho was experiencing a new multiplayer mode, better A.I. and an optimised engine that doesn’t require a million pound computer to run? Oh, so NOW you’re interested.
