Announced back at QuakeCon 2007, known as Quake Zero back then, Quake Live is a free, easy to access, advertising facilitated version of the immensely popular Quake III Arena.
Is it inspiration or convergent evolution on EA’s part, with Battlefield: Heroe’s move to similar, experimental forms of videogame distribution?
Designed to run on any computer, Quake Live will be launched directly from the game’s website (although a download will be required, few details available on that front). From Quake Live.com, the user can access “friends lists and communication, sponsored events and tournaments, matchmaking, and stats tracking”.
At GDC, id announced they will be working alongside advertisement powerhouse IGA Worldwide to ensure the game is a success for players and potential advertisers.
“id Software is among the proverbial godfathers of modern gaming and we are thrilled to be working with them on their first title in our ‘freemium’ category,” said Justin Townsend, CEO of IGA Worldwide.
