Starcraft English Teaches Language With The Protoss
2008-01-22 13:15:22 by Earnest Cavalli in Game | Life

Senglish4_2 Starcraft English, a clever primer exclusive to South Korea, utilizes characters from Blizzard's beloved RTS to teach the English language.

The book uses a combination of adorable illustration and complex word theory -- deconstructing "Hydralisk" into its component root words, for instance -- to impart its lessons.

Tying language acquisition to popular culture certainly isn't a new idea, so it comes as no surprise that Starcraft, a game whose Korean devotees border on religious fanatacism, would eventually be leveraged toward this educational end.

More confusingly though, is the fact that the book examines every character, quote and English phrase in the game. While it's admirable to attempt to engage the reader with characters they know and love, how often do native English speakers discuss the pros and cons of zergling rushes?

Then again, maybe Game|Life is the wrong place to ask something like that.
