Mass Effect Mess: Fox News Reaches Out
2008-01-25 09:49:10 by Susan Arendt in Game | Life

Masseffect Fox News says the best folks to clear up any misconceptions about Mass Effect are the game makers themselves.

According to MTV, a Fox News rep who preferred to stay anonymous, said, "Fox News Channel has extended several invitations to EA through a company representative to appear on 'Live Desk With Martha MacCallum' to discuss 'Mass Effect' and the segment which aired on Monday. We have received no response."

EA now owns BioWare, the developers who actually created Mass Effect.

The saga began when Fox News aired a segment about the sexual content in Mass Effect, expressing concern that such smut was being marketed to children.

EA's Jeff Brown shot a letter to the network, asking them to correct their coverage, which he called inaccurate and insulting. Meanwhile, angry gamers took it upon themselves to strike back at one of the segment's guest experts, Cooper Lawrence, by submitting hundreds of bad reviews to her book's listing on Amazon.com.

No-one from Fox News played any of Mass Effect before reporting on it, and instead gathered their information about its sexual content by "watching it on the Internet." Coming soon, no doubt, a report on how groundhogs are becoming overly dramatic.

Though the segment ran under the heading of 'Se'Xbox, the experts and reporters also brought up the game's violent content as being harmful to children.

Given how little chance Geoff Keighley was given to correct misconceptions and discuss the game's specifics during the original segment, it seems somewhat unlikely that EA would achieve much by appearing on the program.
