
LucasArts are hard at work with new titles like Fracture and The Force Unleashed, but diehard fans are still yearning for the Californian publisher to release their back catalog on new devices.
Everything from Monkey Island to Sam and Max was built on SCUMM, a modular engine that has been released, by fans, for every platform under the sun. But for users without a surreptitious DS homebrew cart, LucasArts has admitted to considering their older titles for a DS release.
“It is something we are continually looking at - new venues to put out our library of games on. We’re not announcing anything about that because honestly I don’t know anything about it.”
PR Manager Chris Norris is obviously excited, but Fracture assistant producer Jeffrey Gullett isn’t so optimistic.
“The cart size of the DS makes it impossible to put out ports of any of our old graphic adventures. There’s literally not enough room on those carts to put the games out.”
Which is of course, a lie. Even with the full voice files (know as a Talkie, for jargonites), Sam and Max’s system files and the SCUMM engine can be placed onto a DS cartridge at little over 180MB. With 2008’s compression techniques, fitting the game on Osu Tatakae Ouendan 2’s 130MB cartridge is certainly a possibility.
Besides, with Archaic Sealed Heat’s 256MB carts, it’s an easy fit. Financially? Maybe not the best idea. Impossible? Far from it.
