Console sales for December 2007 from NPD are now publicly available. December, which is obviously the biggest month for hardware sales in North America, particularly made a big jump this year over the previous year. Records have been smashed all over the place, with the industry generating roughly 18 billion dollars. I know the Nintendo DS was in contention for breaking the record of most units sold during a single month ever, something that was previously held by the PS2. However, it still holds onto that as 2.7 million in December of 2002 remains steadfast, although had supply not tightened up, it’s likely the DS could have surpassed those numbers.
Overall, it was a really good month for most consoles. Supply constrained Wii brought it just slightly above the 360, and even the PS3 wasn’t lagging too far behind for once, mostly because everything higher up was supply constrained. These are the numbers as reported by NPD for the 5-week December period:
PlayStation 2 - 1.1 million
PlayStation 3 - 797.6 K
PSP - 1.06 million
Xbox 360 - 1.26 million
Wii - 1.35 million
Nintendo DS - 2.47 million
